May 7th Cape 1/2d postal stationery postcard to Graaf Reinet, franked at the 1/- northern route rate by two pairs of the 3d on Bechuanaland Protectorate 1d lilac san-serif surcharge, each cancelled by the "MAFEKING / C.G.H" c.d.s, transit and arrival datestamps of Ootsi (11 May, scarce Army Telegraphs c.d.s code O-S), Bulawayo (May 21), Port Elizabeth (June 13) and Graaf Reinet. The card has a long message from R.B Christie to his wife written on May 6 (Day of Siege 206), just 11 days before the town was relieved. Small repair to the upper right corner of the card, otherwise fine and an exceptional item. We have only recorded one other postcard used with Mafeking Siege stamps. Photo on Back Cover. £3,000-3,500

Siege Banknotes and Newspapers

February 1900 1/- and 2/- banknotes issued in Mafeking, both with embossed Bechuanaland Protectorate 1d revenue stamps. The 1/- note (no. B6652) very fine with a few small pinholes and a little light creasing, the 2/- note (no. B7575) in superb uncirculated condition. Also a handwritten letter giving articles 2 and 3 under which these banknotes were issued, with an old attached piece of card stating "from a letter carried by a despatch rider during the Siege of Mafeking". £1 Deep Blue photographically produced siege banknote no. 486 signed by R. Urry and Capt. H. Greener, with embossed 1d revenue stamp, horizontal and vertical folds (both with some splitting) and other small corner faults, still a presentable example of this rare note. Photo on page 129. £150-200

1899 (Nov 1) - 1900 (May 31) "Mafeking Mail, special siege slip", the one page newspaper published daily throughout the siege, various sizes, types and colours of paper, all 152 issues bound in one volume containing interesting siege news and adverts, many for stamps. Faults or tape repairs to three larger size issues, the volume with some wear to the spine, otherwise mainly fine and an interesting set of siege newspapers. (152 papers in one volume). £800-1,000

1900 (July 27) Piece bearing proof impressions of the four cancellations held at the Mafeking Post Office during the siege including the "MAFEKING / C.G.H" c.d.s, the "MAFEKING" telegraphic c.d.s which was occasionally used to cancel stamps, the squared circle datestamp and "1045" numeral. Also two pieces bearing three strikes of a forged "MAFEKING / C.G.H" squared circle (17 MY 00). Very unusual. £300-350

1900 (May 26) Stampless cover written by Major F.W. Panzera, D.A.A.G in the Frontier Forces and C.S.O to Baden-Powell during the siege, to his wife in England, posted just nine days after the relief, with scarce "MAFEKING" c.d.s (no year date). This c.d.s was intended for telegraphic purposes; its use on mail during or after the siege is very unusual. Light staining and a few edge faults. Also May 22nd stampless O.A.S cover from an Officer in the relief force to Cape Town with Mafeking squared circle and "1d" charge mark. (2). £120-150

1900 (May 20) Cover to the Mayor of Hastings marked "Mafeking fund"; May 21st "Standard Special" newspaper announcing the Relief of Mafeking, posted from Dover Station Office on May 23rd franked 1/2d green; and 1901 cover from Uxbridge to "Lt. Col. Vyvyan, Chairman of the Mafeking Relief Fund, Mafeking" with squared circle arrival backstamp (Vyvyan was Town Commandant and Chief Engineer during the siege). Also the 32 page booklet "Siege Views of Mafeking" by E.J. Ross (cover faults) and a "Black & White Budget" magazine featuring Baden-Powell. (5). £130-150

1900 (Aug 22) Letter from New Zealand, sent to General Baden-Powell enquiring after the whereabouts of a friend, John Woodman, who served under Baden-Powell during the siege. The letter was sent to six Officers including the Town Commandant, Chief Constable and Commanding Officers of the Protectorate Regiment and Bechuanaland Regiment, all of whom have endorsed the letter to show Woodman was unknown to them; the letter was then posted back to its original sender in New Zealand enclosed in a stampless O.H.M.S cover, endorsed "Free" and signed by the Staff Clerk, with "MAFEKING / C.G.H" squared circle. 1905 Baden Powell personal Christmas cards, with a printed reproduction of a Baden-Powell drawing of a horseman chasing a hare, two different printings both with printed "Good luck, R.S.S. Baden-Powell", one with "Xmas 1905" added. Both posted from London to "Mrs Winter, Dixon Hotel, Mafeking" or "Major Panzera, Mafeking" (redirected to Francistown) with arrival datestamps, one the single ring "MAFEKING / C.G.H" that was used during the siege, dated 27 Jan. 06 (latest recorded date). Lydenburg. 1900 (Sep 21) Transvaal 1/2d postal stationery postcard with local Lydenburg "V.R.I" overprint uprated with Transvaal 1/2d also overprinted "V.R.I" at Lydenburg both cancelled "P.O.A / 43", the adhesive stamp applied after the postcard was cancelled, commercial message reading "am still in Lydenburg in the best of health, mail just leaving, letter by next". Minor corner creasing to the card, otherwise fine and an exceptional item. Lydenburg stamps are very scarce on cover whilst very few examples of Lydenburg postal stationery are recorded commercially used. Photo on page 135. £1,500-1,800

Siege of O'Okiep

Besieged from 4th April 1902 until 4th May 1902 by a Boer Commando led by Jan Christian Smuts. The town was defended by British and Cape forces as well as miners from the Cape Copper Co. 10/-, £1 and £5 Banknotes were issued during the siege by Lt. Col. W.A.D Shelton, Administrator of Namaqualand district, each note being signed by Captain W.R.R Macdonald and Lieut. P.J. Wood. Few notes were issued and most were exchanged for coin after the siege; these are now amongst the rarest of all the banknotes issued during the Boer War, no more than five examples of each banknote believed to exist.

Ahmednagar. 1901-03 Covers to P.O.Ws in Ahmednagar, from another P.O.W in Diyatalawa Camp, or from South Africa (6, one registered), five of these covers posted in 1903 to P.O.Ws who continued to refuse to sign the Oath of Allegiance, with three covers not received at Ahmednagar until January 1904. Cancellations include Dal Josaphat and Dalmanutha R.O. (7). £220-260

Worthy of further research, presumably from the African interior, taking a full month to reach Cape Town. £100-120

1881 Cover to Wales bearing Cape 6d, endorsed "On Active Service" and signed "J.H.W Bourne, Major, A.S.O" across the stamp, backstamped at Cape Town (Mar 7) and Haverford West. The cover has "No ...... Troop, Cape Mounted Riflemen" printed at the base of the address panel. At this date a small force of Cape Mounted Riflemen and native levies were fighting the Pondomisi, near Umtata, who had risen in sympathy with the Basutos during the Gun War, and were threatening the borders of Griqualand East. Some closed tears at top edge and repaired at right, but a very scarce campaign cover. Photo on page 135. £200-250
