Manuscript Cancels

113
1841 (July 16) Entire letter to Wick bearing a 1d red (four margins) cancelled by an ink 'squiggle', backstamped "DUNNET / S.O" and boxed datestamps of Thurso and Wick. Four other covers are recorded from Dunnet with 1d reds cancelled in manuscript, three of these apparently attempts to imitate the Maltese Cross cancel, whilst a Maltese Cross cancel is recorded used there in April 1841. This cover increases the known Dunnet manuscript cancels to five, this cover being the earliest of these. The Maltese Cross was presumably lost or damaged between April and July 1841 and never replaced, manuscript cancels then being used until Dunnet acquired a numeral cancel in 1844. This cover shows the first Dunnet manuscript cancels were a mere squiggle, the deliberate attempt to imitate the Maltese Cross only appearing at a later date in 1841 or early 1842. The address panel with small hole and tear, otherwise fine, a rare and unusual item. Photo on page 17. £400-600
