1899 Telegrams to "Gemmel" at Mafeking with the "MAFEKING" telegraphic c.d.s, the first sent from Durban on Oct. 11th, the day after war was declared and a day before the siege commenced, "May good luck attend you in this crises", with large straight line "MAFEKING" handstamp; the second telegram from Salt River Station on November 15th, showing telegrams were still being received in the town more than a month into the siege. Repaired folds and some staining but a scarce pair, the only siege period incoming telegram we have recorded. (2). Photo on page 123. £600-700 |

1899 (Dec 20) Cover addressed by Colonel Vyvyan, Town Commander and Chief Engineer during the siege, to his wife in London bearing a Cape 1d cancelled by scarce "CROCODILE POOLS / SOUTH AFRICA" c.d.s, backstamped at Bulawayo, Durban and London, endorsed "Siege, No - 4" by Mrs Vyvyan. Vyvyan is known to have sent ten covers to his wife in England between the start of the siege and the commencement of the postal service from the town in March 1900. Eight of these covers, which were smuggled through the Boer lines, are known to survive, five of these being put into the post at Crocodile Pools (including siege letters 3 and 5, posted on the same date as this cover), whilst two were posted at Bulawayo and one at Tuli. 1900 (Mar 1) Small entire letter written by Major F.W. Panzera, D.A.A.G in the Frontier Forces and C.S.O to Baden Powell, addressed to his wife in England, the address panel headed "no stamps - active service" and signed by Panzera. The enclosed letter talks of making gunpowder, fuses and howitzers, death on both sides and conditions within Mafeking. The Panzera correspondence, originally sold in 2001, contained four smuggled letters dated between 10th February and 10th March 1900, one of which was missing its address panel; these were smuggled out of the town by runners and then presumably posted to England enclosed within another envelope.
