1903-05 French Antarctic Expedition. 1903 (Nov 18) Picture postcard posted from Buenos Ayres, sent within Argentina franked 5c, signed on the picture side by Jean Baptiste Charcot; an attractive embossed card depicting Charcot and his ship in the ice; and a picture postcard headed "Expedition Antartique, Le Francais, Buenos Ayres" posted in 1904 from Argentina to Tunisia, the stamp removed, otherwise fine and scarce (Wharton F1.1). Kerguelen Island. 1909 Large cover (263 x 171mm) to Rene Bossiere in Le Havre bearing Sower 5c and Merson 45c each cancelled by fine circular "RESIDENCE DE FRANCE / ILES KERGUELEN" containing a seated figure of Liberty, with Le Havre (May 23) arrival backstamp. A few minor edge tears, otherwise fine and very scarce, this first cancellation of Kerguelen Island only used February to May 1909. With "Roumet" expert handstamp. Photo on page 92. £750-900

The WW2 correspondence to and from Naval Telegraphist Robert Walker, Prisoner of War in "N" Camp (Argyle Street) Hong Kong, 1943-45. The complete WW2 correspondence, all with enclosed letters, sent between Walker and his fiancée Miss C. Corbett (Rusty) or from his parents, all living in Birmingham, comprising:-
- 1940 (Feb.-Nov.) Covers from Walker at Portsmouth or Fareham (75).
- 1940 (Dec) Cover from Simons Town, South Africa.
- 1941 (Feb.-Sep.) Stampless O.A.S covers from Malaya (18), cancels comprise London Received from H.M Ships (2, one stamped), Field Post Office / S.P.501 (14), Field Post Office / S.P502 (2).
- 1941 (Oct.- Nov.) Covers from Hong Kong (3) with London Received From H.M Ships, two bearing G.B stamps, enclosed letters from Stonecutters Island (2, one an Xmas card of the Wireless Telegraph Station) or H.M.S "Thracian".
- 1942 (June) - 1944 (Sep.) Stampless covers from "Rusty" Corbett or Walker's parents all to Walker in Camp "N", all with British and Japanese censors (various types) (40).
- 1944 (May-Sep.) G.B 3d P.O.W postal stationery postcards (5), from "Rusty" (2) or Walker's parents (3) all to Walker in Camp "N", British and Japanese censor cachets.
- 1944 Japanese P.O.W postcards (2) slightly differing in print size, from Walker to "Rusty", both with censor cachets, dated Oct 9th and Nov. 9th.
- 1943 Japanese P.O.W envelopes (2) with British and Japanese censors, both with letters on printed P.O.W notepaper, Walker ending both letters with "rules to be observed when writing to P.O.W". One dated Aug 8th 1943, the other undated.
- 1945 (Sep. 15-23) Stampless covers from Walker in Manila to "Rusty"; all endorsed "Liberated U.K P.W" with "AUST ARMY P.O / 243" c.d.s, two also with "No. 2 AUST BASE P.O / F" c.d.s and "PASSED FREE / OF POSTAGE". (4).
- 1945 (Sep. 22) Stampless forces air letter from a former P.O.W colleague, Capt. B.A. Head, to Walker in Birmingham. Endorsed "Ex PW Mail" with octagonal framed "HONG KONG / 1945 / POSTAGE PAID".
- 1945 (Oct.) Covers from Toronto to "Rusty", written by Walker enroute back to the UK, two with stamps torn out (4).
- Telegrams telling of Walkers arrival in Canada and Southampton.
- 1945-46 Post Office Savings Book and a photo of "Rusty".
An interesting and unusual complete P.O.W correspondence, some covers a little tatty, those to and from the P.O.W Camp mostly in unusually good condition. (159). Photo on page 91. £5,000-5,500

1815 Entire letter from Inverness to "Alexander Charles Fraser, Assistant to the Resident, Delhi, care of Lucas Mackintosh, Calcutta, Bengal" with two strikes of circular "INDIA SHIP LETTER / LONDON" (Rob. In1) dated 30 OC and 31 OC, explained by the scroll handstamp "PUT IN AFTER 7oCLOCK / AT NIGHT" (W. & J. L1120), listed in the County Catalogue as a Foreign Branch mark but clearly used in the Ship Letter Office, very few examples recorded. Privately carried to London where it was posted, therefore charged 1/2, with boxed "KINGS POSTE / C. INLD do" backstamp. £240-280

1824 Entire letter to England backstamped with fine double ring "GORUCKPOOR / POST OFFICE", paid 13a to Calcutta, the address panel written up in such a way that it appears to be from a soldier and so was only charged 3d in error in London. Handstamped with an unusually fine strike of circular "INDIA SOLDIER & / 3 / LONDON" (Rob. InSol5) and "In All". A fine and unusual use of this India Soldiers handstamp applied in error. 1828 Entire letter from Cawnpore to England headed "From Rough Rider R. Webb 2nd Troop 1st Bde Bengal Artillery. A Soldiers letter" and countersigned by the Commanding Officer, with circular "INDIA SEAMAN & / 1 / LONDON" (Rob. InSol2a). Very few examples are recorded of the 1d charge for soldiers letters from India, delivered to the British Post Office free of sea postage; the "Seamans" handstamp is especially rare with just two or three other examples recorded, all used on letters from soldiers. 1839 Entire letter to London written by an army officer at Jubulpore, strangely charged the 3d soldiers rate in error in London despite not endorsed as being from a soldier, although the reverse has a "3d" charge written alongside the red boxed "JUBULPORE / Paid" datestamp. 1840 Entire letter from Dinapore to London, headed "From Private F. Wicks 1st European Regt" and countersigned by an Officer charged the 4d soldiers concession rate with two strikes of the very scarce double ring "INDIA SHIP LETTER / 4 / LONDON" (Rob. In3). Contents describe the wreck of the troop ship "Duke of Buccleugh" from Gravesend in the Bay of Bengal; the crew, sailors and married soldiers left on the boats leaving the unmarried soldiers stranded on the stricken ship, from which they were rescued by another passing ship two days later. Splitting at folds and rather soiled but very scarce. £350-400

1857 (Oct 11) Letter (no envelope or address panel) written from Delhi by Joseph Drake, no. 2744 no. 10 Company 1st European Bengal Fusiliers, to the sister of Private Walter Hastings who had been killed in the assault on Delhi four weeks earlier. Exceptional content on the Mutiny includes "I send you the sorrowful news of the death of your brother William, he was killed in action on the morning of the 14th of last month when we were storming this place .... he was killed when the Regiment was charging a battery. The cruelties of these black hearted sons of satan was enough to make any man have revenge for the poor women and children that they brutally murdered and cut to pieces, children of three weeks old were torn from their mothers and thrown into the air and caught on the points of the bayonets of those savages, and others cut to pieces and forced down the mouths of their parents, and women cut open and the child taken out and placed on a spear, if that is not enough to make any Briton have revenge I do not know what is ...".
