1896 (June 2) Cover to "Lt. E. Charrington, H.M.S Philomel, Zanzibar" bearing B.E.A ½a, 1a and 2½a with Zanzibar overprints, each cancelled by Zanzibar c.d.s. The only three B.E.A overprint values to have been issued by this date, just the second day of issue of the 1a. Philatelic but still a scarce issue on cover, just 1,200 2½a stamps and 1,800 ½a and 1a stamps issued. A narrow design essay drawn on tracing paper (58x58mm) endorsed "18 Cents Zanzibar" and dated "15th Nov. 21", affixed to thin card (87x73mm); the second wider design essay on thick card (89x114mm) endorsed "30th Nov. 1921, Zanzibar 122/21, 18 Cents", further signed and dated "approved, Charles V. Smith, 9.12.21". Additional 4c, 8c and 20c values were issued in 1922 but this proposed 18c value was not issued despite this value essay having been approved. A unique pair of essays. (2).
