O2a, £1,700 as a stamp) and 1908 Small Papua perf 12½ 2½d upright watermark perfined OS (S.G. O11, £140) each with a fine central c.d.s, backstamped at Thursday Island (July 13), Hong Kong (July 27), London (Aug 26) and Ipswich. The cover slightly reduced at edges and opened out, addressees name and part address removed and details of the stamp and watermark written below each stamp in ink, nevertheless a rare use of this scarce Small Papua overprint 2/6 OS stamp.   c.1906 Long cover to Sydney bearing 1906 Large Papua overprint 1/- block of four (S.G. 19, upper pair a little oxidised) each tied by "BNG" nine bar obliterator of Samarai (Lee type 25, recorded until early 1907). Vertical fold, reverse with a U.S Dollar price written in biro. An unusual high franking and a scarce issue on cover, the rate for a letter of 12oz (at 2d per ½oz, eminently possible on such a large cover); however there are no backstamps, and the block may possibly be cancelled to order. £500-600

  1910 Commercial covers from Port Moresby franked perf 12½ 2d (S.G. 68), the first (Aug 29) to the London Missionary Society in London with backstamps of Thursday Island (Sep 1), Singapore (Sep 26) and London (Oct 20); the second cover (Nov 8) to Samarai with arrival backstamp (Nov 17). A good pair of commercial covers, the basic letter rate to G.B identical to that within Papua. (2). £180-220

Also a 1918 letter to the same addressee, from the Chief Postmaster of Papua giving details of stamps and postal stationery then available. A fine cover with an interesting associated letter. Click to view full image... 1910 (Aug 14) Long registered O.H.M.S cover from Port Moresby to Gibraltar, redirected to London and again to Stirling bearing Small Papua perf 11 6d (S.G. 64) and Large Papua perf 12½ 1d vertical strip of three (S.G. 76), each with a clear c.d.s, a further strike in the lower left corner. Various datestamps, mostly on reverse, comprising Thursday Island (Sep 1), Singapore (Sep 26), Genoa (Oct 18), Madrid, Gibraltar, Plymouth (Nov 4) and London, officially sealed in London using seven "Found Open & Officially Sealed" labels (in two differing types!), four bearing London I.S Registered hooded circle datestamps. A little staining but an interesting officially sealed cover to a very unusual destination and apparently the earliest recorded date of use of the Large Papua perf 12½ issue. S.G. give the date of issue as "Sept. 1910"; this O.H.M.S cover was almost certainly sent by the Chief Postmaster, and may be a first day use of this 1d value. Photo on Page 212. £800-1,000
