Nepa / Tiveri. 1918 (Nov 30) Registered cover to W.T Wilson in England bearing 1911-15 ½d pair, 2d and 1916 1d all cancelled by the very scarce "NEPA / PAPUA" c.d.s (Lee 81), a fifth strike on the front, backstamped at Sydney and London. The tiny office at Nepa opened in 1910 to service the Lakekamu Goldfield, and closed in 1920; from 1910 until 1917 it was moved to Tiveri but continued to use the Nepa c.d.s. The office at Tahira opened in December 1925 to serve the small New Guinea Copper Co. settlement; it closed ten months later in October 1926 shortly before the collapse of the Copper Co.   Port Moresby - Dead Letter Office. 1915 (Dec 22) Cover from Port Moresby to Scotland, redirected several times with datestamps of Glasgow (Feb 12), Holywell, Melton Mowbray (Feb 15) and Melton Mowbray, and violet boxed "REBUT / Inconnu". Returned with backstamps of Singapore and violet "DEAD LETTER OFFICE / PAPUA" (Mar. 28, Lee 107), the sender not located so sent to Australia for disposal with red "DEAD LETTER OFFICE / BRISBANE" backstamp (May 4). Scarce, three examples of this D.L.O datestamp recorded by Lee, used between 1915 and 1933. £150-180

Covers flown in both directions bearing Australia and Papua stamps (3), and covers carried on the return flight only from Port Moresby to Sydney (2), three registered, one unusual registered return flight cover franked OS overprint 1d, 3d, 6d but handstamped "TAX" in violet (Lee 102A) with a 1d due applied in Australia, all with circular or octagonal July 1934 flight cachet.   1917 4d Registration envelopes, size G (2) and size H2 unused, one size G envelope and the size H2 envelope with original backing paper adhering to the flaps, the H2 envelope a little discoloured on the reverse although also still showing unusually good bluing to the reverse, very fine. 1,000 of each envelope were printed; the size H2 envelope is very rarely seen. Click to view full image... 1940 (Mar 12) 4d Registration envelope size H2 from Archdeacon Gill to his brother in England, posted from Ioma franked 1932 2d and 1939 Air 2d pair and 1/- pair (marginal, Ash imprint), Ioma c.d.s (Lee 76) and registration label type R9, violet boxed "PASSED BY CENSOR" applied at Port Moresby, backstamped at Port Moresby and Townsville. Archdeacon Gill wrote regularly to his brother, often with philatelic looking frankings as his brother collected stamps, nevertheless a genuine and very scarce use of this size H2 envelope showing unusually good bluing. 1,000 Envelopes were printed in 1917, its use 23 years later showing how few were actually sold. Minor faults at lower edge, otherwise fine. Photo on Page 212. £250-300

Click to view full image... 1913 Unissued British-German Dirigible Expedition 2pf ultramarine semi-official stamp, intended to help finance the joint expedition to explore the interior of New Guinea and Papua with the aid of an airship. 2pf and 1m stamps were printed, but the expedition was abandoned due to the outbreak of World War One and the stamps were never issued, with very few escaping destruction. British Solomon Islands used in New Guinea. 1918 (May 31) Cover to London bearing British Solomon Islands 1913 ½d strip of three with both end stamps diagonally bisected and a 11d vertically bisected all cancelled by "KIETA" datestamps; and a single 1907 Large Canoe issue 6d with central "KIETA" c.d.s (16 MR 18), accompanied by a photocopy of a 1924 (Jan 22) letter from Stanley Gibbons Ltd to R.P. Croom-Johnson stating "The Solomon Is. used in Papua sent for your inspection were purchased by us from a Naval Officer who was on one of the warships stationed at Kieta, he has assured us they were used in the ordinary way on the date of the postmarks as "Provisionals"". An intriguing pair; we can find no mention of the use of Solomon Islands stamps in New Guinea in 1918 in any literature, and these are the only examples we have seen. (Cover + stamp). Air Mails. 1928 (May 23) Cover to "The Manager, Burn Philp & Co, Salamoa, New Guinea" bearing 1925-27 3d pair (upper margin with part printers imprint) each with typewritten "BY AIR" overprint, cancelled by Edie Creek datestamps, violet "GUINEA AIRWAYS LTD / WAU" cachet applied to the cover and stamp margin (tying the pair to the cover), endorsed "By Junkers J.34" and signed by the pilot A.S Cross. Also a photograph of another 1928 (June 23) cover with a 1d block of four similarly overprinted and cancelled also endorsed by Junkers J34. A rare cover, these flights from Edie Creek to Wau not listed in the Australian Air Mail Catalogue and apparently unrecorded; the "By Air" typewritten overprints clearly accepted at Edie Creek and possibly authorised by the Post Office there. This stamp was printed in red in error, the error only discovered when the stamps reached St. Helena (although type D12a Specimen overprints had already been distributed by the U.P.U by then); the stamps were all officially burnt with the exception of a very few copies overprinted with this violet Specimen handstamp for inclusion in presentation sets.
