Also three 1942 pieces bearing Japanese stamps comprising 1939 3s + 1942 5s tied by Kuching c.d.s (Oct 6), 1939 1s + 1942 5s tied by Mukah c.d.s, or 1939 8s tied by scarce Meluan c.d.s.   Rev. Arthur Stonton. 1934-50 Covers sent to or from Stonton (19) and original or copy letters sent between Stonton and G.E Hansford, author of "Sarawak and her Stamps" (14), with various associated research notes and photocopies. Included are pre-war covers (9) with cancels of Miri, Simanggang, Lingga (2) and Kapit, and post-war covers (10) with cancels of Simanggang (2), Saratok, Betong, Binatang, Bintulu, Debak, Rejang, Kapit and Lingga. Also 1936-38 original or copy letters sent between G.E Hansford and Choo Ah Hian (12, one 1936 letter with printed air mail cover franked 25c); 1950 G.B air letter to Dr Liston in Kuching but returned to Scotland; and photos taken during the 1954 visit of H.M.S "Modeste" to Sibu (11). An interesting lot, some scarce cancels and interesting letters on Sarawak and its philately. (21 covers + letters/photos). £600-800

R, c/o Base Postal Depot Bombay", addressed to the Commanding Officer of the 10/15th Punjab Regt in India, franked 25c cancelled by the very scarce "F.P.O 50C" c.d.s, triangular "PASSED BY / CENSOR / No. 3099" and Ambala arrival c.d.s (Aug 5), Indian Section Base Office backstamp (July 28). Also a single 25c stamp with partial 1941 (June 23) Indian Section Base Office c.d.s. The rare F.P.O 50C used at Kuching by the Sarawak Defence Forces, an earlier use than recorded by Proud. (2). Click to view full image... c.1943 Type 2 Borneo P.O.W card, on thin brown card with six pre-printed phrases on reverse, unusually with these crossed out and a 107 word message written, contrary to regulations but allowed by the Japanese on this occasion, sent to England by "Mrs H. Broodbank, British Born, Kuching, Sarawak, N. Borneo". Handstamped violet "Borneo Prisoners of War Camp" and boxed "Censored" unusually with two red censor chops (Kubo + Suga?) and a British P.W Censor. Usual minor edge creases and a vertical fold but much finer than most of the few recorded examples of this card. Also a 1945 (Sep 11) letter from Hilda Broodbank at Kuching on Australian Comforts Fund notepaper (no cover), the first letter written after her release. (2). Photo on Inside Back Cover. £500-600
