  MILITARY & NURSING MEDALS.A group of three medals to Captain G Pinney, in box of issue and complete with slip. 1939/45 Star, Africa Star with bar 8th Army. War Medal. Gerald Pinney 1907-1990 was serving in the Royal Corps of Signals during WWII. A copied photograph shows him on a horse in front of the Egyptian landscape. Also with the medals is his Regular Army Reserve of Officers lapel badge. Complete with his details of service documents. Also a related group of four boxed medals to Lt Moore, again with his Military Identity record, etc 1939/45 & Burma Stars, War & Defence medals.A Voluntary Service in Nursing silver medal, named to Miss Muriel Graveley. Three further Red Cross Nursing awards with service bars, one named to M M Graveley.Miss Graveley was a Teacher by profession, a Voluntary Red Cross Nurse by choice. 22024 Pte A H Comper served in the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, Killed in Action 13/4/1918 in France & Flanders. A native of Sussex, commemorated on the County Memorial.Details are sparse about Pte Comper in his MIC card etc, though a Henry Comper and his wife lived in Washington, Sussex C1881. (Grandparents?) The family appear to have resided in the area, for many years.£50-70

  A DOURO TREASURE SOVEREIGN.A Younghead Victorian Sovereign dated 1848. Sold in Spink's Auction of the 20/21 November 1996.On the 31st March the R M S Douro a well known and efficient ship, left Lisbon for Southampton, over 1.30 hrs behind schedule. Steaming at full speed ahead she and a Spanish Vessel Yrurac Bat, collided with fatal results. While only six passengers lives and seven crew members were lost on the Douro, a total of 59 lives were lost in total. Most were lost in the other vessel, including her Captain and senior officers.Discovered after some 40 years of attempting to locate the wreck, crockery and latterly Gold Sovereigns were brought to the surface. This was spectacular as it lay 1,500 ft down, no other iron ship had given up its treasures, at such a depth at that time. Almost 93% of the Bullion Bars and Sovereigns were recovered.This and the next three lots are in their original numbered lot form, from that Auction.£170-200

Issued unnamed (not erased), the bar having official rivetted fixings. The medal nicely toned, with no signs of wear. With it a Silver Army Temperance Medal with Victorian crown, damaged enamel.£150-200

  A CMG-QSA-KSA GROUP OF THREE MEDALS TO THE APD.Companion of St Michael & St George, Queens South Africa Medal with bar Cape Colony, Kings South Africa bars 1901 & SA 1902. The latter two medals named to Col G H Moore-Lane CMG APD. The three mounted for wear and contained in a fitted Spinks case, with a buckle mount on the CMG. The ghost dating is very clear on the QSA reverse, both the latter two oficially named in slanting engraved capitals. A matching miniature group, also mounted for wearColonel George Howard Moore-Lane was born on the 19th October 1844. Paymaster APD from 26/5/1879.Major APD from 26/5/1884T/Staff Paymaster " 8/5/1889Staff Paymaster " 1/4/1895Chief Paymaster " 26/1/1901.Previous Service with 15 & 77 Regt Districts.The son of the late Thomas Moore-Lane of Madras India. Married 1875 Mary T de Courcy, daughter of Admiral M de Courcy RN.Left Southampton on the Persia on Saturday 9th April 1900 for service in South Africa.Mentioned in Despatches LG 10/9/1901 awarded the CMG.£400-600
