A brace of Tudor style buttons, again with original Certificate undated.£100-150THE SOUTH PETHERTON HOARDWhen the Hoard was discovered by a Metal Detectorist, it brought the 3rd Century AD's 'turbulent times' to life. The Hoard consisted of over 7,500 coins, mostly in base metal that had lost their 'silver wash' over the centuries. The period where Emperors and Usurpers were commonplace, including their wives. Those who seized control or were placed there by their Legions were not safe. They were also aware that their families would follow them quickly to their graves or worse. The Roman way was to make sure revenge was not possible from 'the next life'. In the Hoard are coins that were minted during these uncertain times.LAELIANUS 268AD: He led the revolt against the Emperor Postumus. His end came swiftly, lasting only a few months.MARIUS 268AD (A Blacksmith): A metal worker of considerable strength, who history tells us lasted between 3-17 days. Killed by a sword, he himself had forged by one of his own officers.VICTORINUS 268-270AD: After being proclaimed Emperor by his legions, he laid siege to Augustodunum a city. It took several months to fall; he was then murdered by his own officers.TETRICUS I and TETRICUS II (Jr): Proclaimed as Emperors in 270AD. They ruled Gaul until The Emperor Aurelian invaded it. Prostrating themselves before him they were pardoned and lived their lives out in Rome.CLAUDIUS (II) GOTHICUS 268-270AD: Was suspected of being involved in the assassination of Gallienus. A very capable General who spent his two year of rule fighting the enemies of Rome. After a resounding victory over the Goths, he and many of his troops succumbed to the plague that the Goth Prisoners carried.VALERIAN 253-260AD: Proclaimed Emperor after the death of Gallus (murdered by his own troops). A capable Emperor who fought all enemies of Rome, continually. With his army decimated by disease, he was taken captive by Sharpur I. He was the first Roman Emperor to be captured alive. He died in slavery, the date uncertain.GALLIENUS 253-268AD: A son of Valerian who made no attempts to free his father (they reigned jointly for seven years). He and his wife Salonina were murdered by their own troops in 268AD. Their sons were Saloninus and Valerian II. The former was executed by the Emperor Postumus, the latter died young, mysteriously.QUINTILLUS 259AD: The brother of Claudius II (GOTHICUS) who was proclaimed Emperor after his death. Aurelian invaded, his troops deserted before his own officers murdered him.POSTUMUS 259-268AD: After rebelling against Gallienus, he ruled Britain, Gaul and Spain for nine years. After putting down the revolt of Laelianus, he forbade his troops to sack the City of Mainz. He was then assassinated by his own troops. So being proclaimed Emperor was not always a wise move. If you turned it down, your own troops might kill you or you could be recalled to Rome and tortured before execution, for allowing the calling out of Imperator. So in 2013 history was brought to light when the SOUTH PETHERTON HOARD was discovered.
