Also covers (4) with 1d tied by numbers 2, 4 or 8 (2) in Maltese Cross, one stamp (number 8) with four large margins, two others (numbers 4, 8) very close or just touched at one side but otherwise fine. 1857 (Mar 17) Cover from William Gladstone in London to Lord Fielding in Holywell, signed "W. Gladstone" in the lower left corner and containing a three page signed letter in Gladstone's hand, franked by a 1d red. Redirected to Rome with 2d blue pair, 1856 6d lilac and 1/- green paying the 1/10 double rate via Italy and Austria, each stamp tied by a superb "375" numeral, various other handstamps including red "PD" and "VIA DI MARE". Small stain to the 1d red, otherwise superb, an exceptional franking on a redirected letter. The sender William Gladstone was Prime Minister four times. Photo Inside Front Cover. £800-1,000
