Malta. 1841 Entire letter from Foynes, Ireland to "H.M.S Rodney, Malta or elsewhere, Mediterranean Station" franked by an imperf 1d red (4 margins) with central Maltese Cross cancel (another partial Maltese Cross on top flap), endorsed "to pay 11d", altered to a 1/- charge. Backstamped with "MALTA" datestamp with a Maltese Cross at base and two close together arcs, the latest recorded date of use of this very scarce datestamp and an exceptional early stamped entire to Malta. Portugal - Madeira. 1856 Stampless entire to France backstamped with "MADEIRA" double arc datestamp and green "PLYMOUTH / PACKET LETTER" datestamp (Rob. P2), red boxed "COLONIES / &c ART-18" on the front. This scarce Plymouth Packet Letter datestamp was used from 1853 to 1858 on contract mails carried by the African Steam Ship Co., which operated to the West Coast of Africa; the datestamp ceased to be used when the company moved its base from Plymouth to Liverpool in 1858. Recorded in green from 1856 to 1858. £100-120

1697-1701 Correspondence to Richard Hill, the first 32 letters written by James Bateman (who later became Lord Mayor of London from 1697-99), all addressed to Hill as His Britannic Majesty's Envoy Extraordinaire to the Elector of Bavaria at Antwerp, Brussels or Loos, most probably carried by diplomatic bag, a few with rates in red crayon, and four 1699-1701 letters from Ghent to Hill (now Lord of the Treasury) in London, one with a Bishop Mark and the postal rate crossed out. Also a few financial documents, one a bill for hospital treatment of British troops at Bylocke during Marlborough's Campaign of 1696.
