Damaged/Delayed by Enemy Action. Two 1940 (Oct 19) covers posted from London W1 to London SE5, one with red boxed "DELAYED AND DAMAGED / BY ENEMY ACTION" and London SE c.d.s of Dec 14th, the other with violet "DELAYED BY / ENEMY ACTION" and London SE c.d.s of Nov 4th. Also a badly burnt O.A.S honour envelope enclosed within a London R.L.S ambulance envelope (faults) handstamped straight line "DAMAGED BY ENEMY ACTION", and 1942 cover from Liverpool, damaged by fire, with "Bombed" in pencil and bearing a label apologising for the damage with a Liverpool c.d.s (Aug 1). Soldiers Concession Rate. 1811 Printed certificate certifying that Thomas Wilkinson was serving in the Eastern Regiment of Middlesex Militia instead of William Tempany, posted at the 1d rate from Portsmouth to Essex, countersigned by the Commanding Officer; and 1818 handwritten certificate from the vicar of St. Nicholas Church in Bristol confirming the marriage of Thomas Joseph and Agnes Sheffra, sent at the 1d rate from Bristol to "Thomas Joseph, Private in Lieut. Chobham/Aldershot. 1853 Covers from Chobham Camp bearing 1d reds cancelled "179" (2, one with enclosed letter) and a part entire (front with upper flap) redirected to Chobham Camp, all with scarce "CHOBHAM CAMP" double arc backstamp. Also 1856-58 cover and part cover with similar "ALDERSHOT CAMP" double arc datestamp or duplex (both with faults), 1856 letters with engravings of "Queens Pavilion" or the "Camp at Aldershot", and 1879 letter from Arthur, Duke of Connaught on "Royal Pavilion, Aldershot Camp" notepaper. The scarce Chobham Camp was the first English camp postmark, used at the great summer encampment and royal review. (8). £150-180

Wimbledon. 1874 (July 4) Cover with printed heading "National Rifle Association / CAMP, WIMBLEDON, S.W." bearing a 1d red cancelled by London duplex, backstamped by "WIMBLEDON CAMP / S.W." c.d.s, part flap missing, otherwise fine. Also a single 3d stamp cancelled by a large part strike of the same c.d.s in 1872. 1928-39 Covers (12), a piece and a certificate of posting all bearing skeleton camp datestamps, comprising Parham Park (1928, registered), Beaulieu Heath (1930), Wicklesham (1931), Horsebridge (1935), Hollom Dn Barn (1935), Houghton Down (1935), Burley (1936), St. Giles (1937, registered, with C.O.P), Panfield (1937, registered), Oxney (1938, on piece), Popham (1938, two covers, both registered), and Bagshot Moor (1939), all philatelic, nevertheless a scarce group. Naval Letters

1791-1812 Entire letters to or from Hugh McKibben serving on H.M.S "Aegelus", "Irresistable", "Royal William", "Hamadraid", "Princess Royal", "Aurora" or at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, mostly serving around the British Isles but including letters to or from Hispaniola, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Cadiz or Mahon, three 1796 letters headed "A seamans letter" and signed by the Commanding Officer, prepaid at the 1d sailors rate, some interesting content noted including the capture of two Spanish Naval ships off Gibraltar, shipwreck off Algiers for which they were cleared by a court martial, etc. Very mixed quality, many rather dirty or with faults though many others are reasonable including two of the 1d rate letters, very early examples of the 1d concession rate. Also an 1805 entire letter from H.M.S "Kent", Cork Harbour stating that James Caldwell formerly of H.M.S "Loire" was wounded at Minorca on 4th June last, was sent to the "Kent" Hospital Ship on 13th June but died on 16th June and was decently buried the following day. 1792-1808 Orders and letters from the Victualling Office at Mahon, Admiral Gambier given on the "Ville de Paris" at Torbay or from Capt. John Ford of H.M.S "Carnatic" in Hamoze, all to Sir John Thomas Duckworth, the last to Duckworth as Captain of H.M.S "Orion" in 1792 ordering him to trial a new invention of "Fleecy Hosiery Springes". Also 1798 Order signed by Earl St. Vincent from the "Ville de Paris" off Cadiz to the Captains of five ships ordering each to send on board the "Flora" transport a sober Quarter Master with his hammock and a fortnight's provisions, and 1801 Order signed by Admiral Robert Calder given on the "Prince of Wales" at sea, to Capt. Darby of H.M.S "Spencer". (5). £80-100

Martinique. 1795-1801 Documents and letters comprising 1795 (Apr 11) document from "Britannic Transport off St. Pierre, Martinique" to Capt. Darby H.M.S "Adamant", St. Eustatia, ordering the "Adamant" and "Woolwich" to Martinique, the "Beaulieu" and "Nautilus" to St. Kitts and the "Veteran" to Guadeloupe; 1801 Victualling Office letters (2) to Admiral Duckworth in Martinique regarding supplies purchased in Martinique, Antigua or Leeward Islands; 1801 Navy Office letter to Admiral Duckworth at Martinique refusing his request to pay rent on a house on the island; 1801 Transport Office letter thanking Admiral Duckworth for ordering the Naval storekeeper on Martinique to supply H.M. Transport "Coromandel" with clothing. Signatures include Admirals Benjamin Caldwell and Adam Duncan. (5). £350-400

Gibraltar/Earl St. Vincent. 1798 Orders signed by Earl St. Vincent, given on "Le Souverain" at Gibraltar transmitting day and fog signals to Commodore Duckworth, or given on the "Ville de Paris" off Cadiz to the Ordinance Officers at Gibraltar. Earl St. Vincent was C. in C. in the Mediterranean capturing the Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent in 1797 and blockading Cadiz in 1798. (2). £100-120

Earl St. Vincent. 1798 Orders all signed by Earl St. Vincent from the "Ville de Paris" off Cadiz including a warning to the Officers of H.M.S "Marlborough" that they must prevent drunkenness amongst the men, the Surgeon of H.M.S "Marlborough" has certified that Charles Moore is fit to receive the remainder of his punishment and that each ship in the Squadron is to send an Officer and two soldiers or marines to the "Marlborough" to attend the punishment, the French national frigate "La Sensible" has entered His Majesty's service, ships from the Squadron before Cadiz forced by wind or currents to sail through the Straits are to stand off Tetuan Bay until the wind turns eastwards allowing their return, etc. (9). £350-400

1801 (Oct 10) Entire letter from John Howden, Purser on "H.M.S Leopard, off the Island of Ceylon", to his daughter in Scotland with curved "BRIGHTON / SHIP LRE" handstamp. Ceylon was captured by the British in 1795 but not formally ceded to Britain until 1803. A scarce early letter from Ceylon. £250-300

1802-79 Entire letters and covers comprising 1802 entire letter from John Lodington at Yarmouth, to the R.M. Barracks at Chatham ordering a snuff box for Royal Marine Lt. Green wounded in the "Codania" action at Copenhagen; 1807-09 entire letters from John Spence, Assistant Surgeon on H.M.S "Lively" at Lisbon (with Portsmouth Ship Lre handstamp) or at "Marina, near St. Jago"; 1812 entire letter from Royal Marine Lt. R.W Pascoe on H.M.S "Phoebe" at Plymouth - "We are once more returned to England, have brought home the dispatches of the final surrender of Java"; 1848 stampless cover and letter from Portsmouth to "Captain Henderson, H.M.S "Sidon", Malta"; 1866 cover franked 6d to H.M.S "Icarus", Cape of Good Hope (faults) and 1879 cover from Pembroke Dock to H.M.S "Euryalus" at Aden (faults). Jamaica. 1803-05 Letters to Sir John Duckworth in Jamaica comprising Transport Office letters concerning French Prisoners of War brought to Jamaica (2), Navy Office letter regarding the ship "Aguillar" taking troops to Barbados and Jamaica, and 1803 letter from Kingston, Jamaica enclosing a return of provisions and water required for the use of the crew and sick prisoners of war on board the Hospital ships "La Nouvelle Sophie" and "La Justine", signatures include Admirals Adam Duncan and Ambrose Serle. Admiral Gambier. 1808 Orders signed by Gambier headed from the "Ville de Paris" in Hamoze (3) or Cawsand Bay, or the "Caledonia" in Hamoze, all to Admiral Sir John Duckworth. Orders concern various ship movements, directions that transports carrying sick and wounded of the Army in Portugal are to proceed to the hospital at Plymouth, etc. (6). £180-220

Hyde Parker/Nova Scotia. 1814 (May 14) Entire letter written and signed by Hyde Parker from H.M.S "Tenedos" at Halifax, addressed to London with "HALIFAX" and London backstamps, charged 2/2. Vice-Admiral Hyde Parker became First Sea Lord of the Admiralty in 1853. £70-90

1836 (July 26) Entire letter from "H.M.S Tribune, Fogus, Gulf of Smyrna" to "Sir Wm. Burnett, K.C.G, Physician General, Admiralty", privately carried, unusually with circular disinfection cachet applied at Semlin. Written by Assistant Surgeon A.B. Macleroy requesting promotion to Surgeon and enclosing copies of testimonials from seven other Surgeons he had worked under and the Captain of the "Tribune", certified as true copies by the ship's Purser and Surgeon. £150-200
