Wreck of the Rangoon. 1872 (Apr 19) Post Office O.H.M.S cover to Lord Blantyre in London, redirected locally free of charge with red London Official Paid c.d.s and handstamp of "J.R. Smith", the address panel endorsed at the left (in the same writing as the address) "Letter to Walter Jared from the Wreck of the Rangoon". The "Rangoon" was wrecked off Galle, Ceylon on 1st November 1871 en-route to Sydney, several mailbags subsequently being recovered by divers and returned to London. This P.O envelope evidently used as an ambulance envelope, presumably to return a letter written by Lord Blantyre that was recovered from the wreck with the address unreadable or the envelope missing. Hoggarth and Gwynn recorded a cover and piece with "Saved from the Wreck of The Rangoon" cachets and one other cover with a manuscript note, possibly this very cover. A scarce item, the endorsement clearly written on the cover by the Post Office. Photo on page 68. £250-300
