English Civil War, 1642-48

1644 (Mar 9) Entire letter written from Newark by Lieut. Col. Willis, an Officer in the Kings army and Governor of Newark, addressed to Lord Fairfax (Ferdinand Fairfax, Governor of York and Commander of the Parliamentarian forces in Yorkshire) at York. The letter requests a pass for Lady Corke, promises to allow Mr Robdham to enter and leave Newark in safety, and asks which Officers Fairfax would want in exchange for Simon Fanchaw of Pontefract. The letter with a little staining but otherwise fine, attached at one edge by archival tape within a hardbound book, with a transcription of the letter and historical notes. A unique Civil War letter from a senior Royalist Officer to a senior Parliamentarian Officer shortly before the first siege of Newark. Willis later became a double agent passing information to Cromwell's secret service, and was banished from Court in 1660. £250-300

1644 (Mar 23) Entire letter from John Savile at Wakefield, addressed "ffor the right Hon.ble Fferdinando Lord ffairfax Lord Generall of the Northern forces these present", the contents concerning the strength of troops at Sandal. A fine civil war letter with good content, to the Commander of the Parliamentarian forces in Yorkshire. Photo on page 39. £250-300

1644 (July 7th) Handwritten pass "to all Commanders, soldiers & other Officers in service for King and Parliament" - "Permitt and suffer the bearer hereof Sir Charles Egerton Knt from tyme to tyme to passe and repasse about every necessary occasions wheresoever you shall so as he be nott in ye quarter of ye enemy with his servants and horses without molestation or trouble and hereof none of you may faile at your peril. Given under my hand at York", signed by Ferdinando Fairfax. Fairfax commanded the Parliamentarians in Yorkshire, commanded the infantry at Marston Moor in 1644 and was Governor of York 1644-45. Light stain to signature, otherwise largely fine and an interesting Civil War document. Also a 1660 letter written in London by John Every. (2). £100-120

1744 (May 23) Entire letter from Philip Browne to his brother Thomas in London written from "Camp at Barlagem, two leagues from Oudenard", with very good content on the campaign including "on the 8th inst. we marched from Bruxelles & incamped at Arche, having the Convent of Afflegem on our right, which was the headquarters where the Duke of Marlborough lay the night before the battle of Oudenard & Alost & the river Dender a league in our front. On the 20th inst. a detachment of six thousand Dragoons & foot with six field pieces decamped to secure the pass of Gaveren on the Schelt ... on the 22nd we came to our present camp & upon our coming to our ground we could distinctly hear the Cannon from Menim, & we are told the French begun the Siege of that place on the 19th inst. at night.....". A fine campaign letter, with "MA/28" Bishop Mark, charged 10d. £200-250

1744 (Sep 1) Entire letter from Philip Browne to his brother in London written from "Camp at Asque near Lille", with a poor strike of the scarce encircled "AA" (Armee Autriche), charged 10d, good content on the campaign includes "on Wednesday last there was eight thousand men detached towards Bruges & Ghent, it is said that the inhabitants of those two citys are entirely in French interest, & that the Governors thereof was fearful of the revolt of the populace - we continue to forage upon the country ... we have had no skirmishes of consequence as yet, but have frequently a few men & horses both killed & taken owing to the imprudence of those that venture beyond the guard". Small edge fault at left, otherwise a fine campaign letter. £250-350

1745 (10/13/23 April) Entire letters from Philip Browne to his brother in London all with Bishop Marks, each charged 10d, the first two letters written from Brussels, the third letter from "Camp at Soignies" with a reasonable strike of scarce encircled "AB" (Armee Britanniques), the three letters concerning the purchase of a Captaincy for £3,100. All three letters unfortunately with part of the address written through in ink, nevertheless three useful campaign letters. (3). £200-250

1812 (Aug 11) Entire letter from a British Officer, C. Mayne, to his father in Ireland, with green "LISBON / F" packet letter datestamp applied at Falmouth. Written from Salamanca a month after the battle, the contents include "the detachment marched to convey treasure up to the army, we were separated and I had 28 mules loaded with doubloons and dollars as my charge .... from the number of sick here I have been very badly attended, two and three days without a medical officer coming near me .... All the letters are conveyed by men who ride upon mules and they have a large whip which is kept constantly cracking that it may be heard at some distance, I suppose by way of a horn ..... I met several thousand French prisoners under Spanish and Portuguese guards, they treated the unfortunate wretches most cruelly, some of them sick and others wounded who could not proceed they thought nothing of shooting ....". Also 1812 (June 30) entire letter written from Tunbridge Wells by Lady Wellington to Francis Freeling, Secretary of the Post Office, thanking him for forwarding some parcels to her and for his offer to send some boxes of clothing to Lord Wellington. General Cannon, Pera of Constantinople" with envelope signed by Cannon and addressed "H.M.S, To The British Army Post Master, Balaklava", delivered by hand. 1854-55 Entire letters comprising 1854 (Oct 9) entire letter from "Therapia" with contents referring to many men dying of wounds and sickness at Scutari Hospital; 1854 (June 11) entire letter written on the "Himalaya" at Stamboul by Capt. W. Ingles, posted unpaid in London (faults); 1855 (May 12) entire letter written from Camp before Sebastopol by Sergt. T. Mitchell R.A, contents include "I was promoted Sergeant on the 13 April and since then my name has appeared in orders for a medal and gratuity of £10 for distinguished service in the field. I was recommended for it after the Battle of Inkerman. I enclose a letter for my brother. I sent it long ago and the shabby people at the Post Office London sent it all the way back to me from London for 10d more postage. Put it in an envelope and send it but first find out the postage and pay it beforehand. It stated when returned that persons should find out at the Post Office the price of postage before sending letters across the sea - now where in the name of wonder did the ignorant swine think we was going to find a post office before Sebastopol" (faults); and 1855 (Aug 16) entire letter from Camp before Sebastopol with details of a Russian attack on the French and Sardinians, posted to Ireland bearing 1d red strip of three cancelled in London, backstamped "POST OFFICE / B / BRITISH ARMY". Emily Anderson was the Lady Superintendent of the General Hospital at Scutari and was directly responsible to Florence Nightingale at the Barrack Hospital. Charge of the Light Brigade. 1854 (Aug 9) Cover to Ireland endorsed "From G.P. Houghton, 11th Hussars" bearing three 1d reds cancelled in London, backstamped by a fine "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" datestamp; and 1855 cover from London franked 1d red strip of three (one torn) addressed to "Captain R. Portal, 4th Light Dragoons, Crimea". Houghton and Portal both rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade on October 25th 1854; Houghton was mortally wounded in the charge whilst Portal had his horse shot from under him. (2). Baltic Fleet/Danzig. 1855 Stampless cover to London endorsed "via Dantzic" with partial "DANZIG" c.d.s, charged 3d, a "7" charge crossed out, with enclosed letter written by George Thomas Steel from "H.M.S Pylades, Off Dago, Russia, 1st June". The interesting letter includes "the Rob Roy merchant steamer arrived from Hull & brought newspapers & letters for the men. The Officers letters via Dantsic have gone on to the fleet. We left Faro Sound at 1pm in company with the Redwing, Starling & Thistle gun boat & this morning sighted the lighthouse on Dago Island belonging to Russia. 2nd June - we anchored off Nargen Island at 11a.m. We found Ajax, Vulture & Lightning steamers here. Nargen is now held by the English. We are about 10 miles from Reval & can see it in the distance, there are several fortifications about it. The Ajax is here to blockade the port & has already taken several prizes. We sail tomorrow for Serka, a small island near Cronstadt where we expect to find the English fleet. June 3rd - The Cossack & Esk steam corvettes arrived from the fleet. We hear the Russians have built a large fort in Burca Sound & have got several ships & gun boats behind it. The Magicienne & Merlin have taken nearly 20 prizes. We have got 3 Russian soldiers who deserted from Revel. They say they are Poles. 4th June - Off Hogland, a long island in the Gulf of Finland. 9 P.M. - We have just anchored with the fleet about 7 miles off Cronstadt which we can very plainly see. The English & French ships reach quite across the Gulf from side to side so that it is impossible for any Russian vessel to get through. We can see their batteries and ships very plainly". Baltic Fleet/Danzig. 1855 Stampless cover to Thirsk endorsed "via Dantzic" with superb "DANZIG" c.d.s (Aug 3), charged 3d, containing two letters written by R.S Crompton from H.M.S "Duke of Wellington" at anchor at Nayer, 23rd July, and again on July 31st. The July 23rd letter includes "We are nearer in to Reval than ever and when the sun is on the place can distinguish the ladies walking on the promenade. Several yachts have come up here to see the fleet. Many of the cruisers have been at work firing at forts, destroying store houses and burning houses and different places". The 31st July letter includes "all the ships have assembled here and the hospital ship has come round from Jarre Sound, also all the smaller vessels so there must be something up after all this. The gun boats have been employed burning some places to the north of Cronstadt." A fine Baltic Fleet cover. Photo on page 45. £400-500

Patriotic Envelopes. 1855-57 Covers with the flaps inscribed "May They Ever Remain United" above coloured and embossed crossed flags of Britain and France, posted from Brighton to Eastbourne or Kilmacthomas to London. The 1857 cover with "Alma" incorporated within the French flag, this cover with some faults to the flags on the flap, the earlier cover with minor edge faults but otherwise fine. (2). £70-90

William Simpson - War Artist. 1855 Letters written and signed by the celebrated war artist William Simpson, to John Scott (2) or William Day of Colnaghi's, who sent Simpson to the Crimea to make sketches. Written from "Orient, Balaklava" (Jan 31), "on board the Royal Albert, Kasatol Bay" (Feb 17) or "Star of the South, Balaklava" (Sep 21) the letters describe his work in progress with descriptions of events seen and painted, including "The Navies arrived yesterday and today I saw them at work on the railway between the road and the graves which you will notice in my sketch of the Burial at Balak, they look very well, fine strong fellows, quite a contrast to our poor soldiers, in fact they will almost pass for Officers out here." 1914-18 Covers and cards comprising 1914-1915 cards to an English internee in Ruhleben (2); 1915 cards to an internee in Handforth Camp Cheshire with "P.C / HANDFORTH" censor cachets (2); 1918 covers to Russia all returned with "SERVICE SUSPENDED" cachets (9); also printed "Knockaloe Aliens Detention Camp, Peel, Isle of Man" O.H.M.S parcel tag to "Neutral Countries, London"; front from Russia captured by the Germans and delayed; and censor slips used in returned mail that revealed unit locations or information on the making of munitions.
