Aberdeen Airways/Northern & Scottish Airways. 1937 (Jan 20) Picture postcard from Co. Durham to Lerwick flown by Aberdeen Airways emergency flight, bearing the Airlines vignette (guaranteed by F. Field), and Nov. 23rd covers carried on the first official flight from Aberdeen to Lerwick (2) or Lerwick to Aberdeen (5), two bearing the vignettes. Also 1937 (Mar 14) cover flown by Northern & Scottish Airways from Glasgow to Campbeltown due to an accident to the Islay mail boat, signed by the pilots. Highland Airways. 1934 (May 29) First flight covers carried without an air surcharge from Kirkwall to Inverness (5, one registered) or Inverness to Kirkwall, July 27th flown cover to Kirkwall with first day use of the new Air Mail label, and December 1st covers flown by the first regular flight from Kirkwall to Wick (3), Wick to Inverness (3) or Kirkwall (2), or Inverness to Wick (4), five covers with the airline's vignette. Highland Airways/Allied Airways. 1937 (Jan 25) Commercial covers and cards from Westray, Rousay or Sanday all to Kirkwall, Kirkwall to Westray, or England to Shetland, all flown by emergency air service due to gales preventing the mail boat reaching the islands. Also November 23rd registered cover from Aberdeen to Lerwick and covers from Kirkwall to Lerwick all signed by the pilot E. A. Starling with cachet "CHIEF PILOT, ALLIED AIRWAYS (GANDAR DOWER) LTD", the two covers from Kirkwall also signed by C. B. Wilson with "Pilot, Highland Airways Ltd." cachets. Scottish Airways. 1938 (Dec 16) Commercial cover from Kirkwall to North Ronaldsay with cachet "FIRST AIR MAIL TO NORTH / RONALDSAY / EMERGENCY FLIGHT / 17th DECEMBER, 1938" and signed by the pilot J.A. Hankins, with a contemporary newspaper article about the flight from "The Orcadian", illustrated in "British Air Mails" by Baldwin, who states "only about 16 covers with cachet believed to exist, a result of the stamps being torn off and given to the Kirkwall Hospital extension stamp fund before the significance of the covers was realised". Also 1938 first flight covers from Orkney to Inverness or Wick to London, 1939 first regular service covers flown in both directions between Glasgow and Campbeltown or Kirkwall and North Ronaldsay, 1943-44 covers flown from Glasgow to Tiree (2, Henlow Camp to Stornoway), Benbecula or Tiree to Glasgow, etc. (13). Manchester. 1905 Stampless cover to Germany with superb oval "POSTED IN ADVANCE / M.R. / 1905 / FOR DELIVERY ON XMAS DAY", boxed "Porto" and a 40pf postage due charge shown in blue crayon, backstamped at Hamburg (Dec 22). Mail posted under this advance posting scheme had to be locally addressed at this date, an overseas address clearly being contrary to regulations. We have recorded just two other items posted abroad with advance posting for Christmas cancels, whilst just two or three such items are known posted unpaid and charged postage due, this unpaid use to Germany almost certainly unique. The Dec. 22nd arrival backstamp shows it was despatched from Manchester well before Christmas. A remarkable use of this cancel. Photo Inside Front Cover. £400-450
