Click to view full image... 1874 Cover to London bearing 4d vermilion plate 13 vertical pair each tied "B01" with an Alexandria c.d.s alongside, marked as a double weight letter with scarce boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID" applied and a manuscript 1/2 charge. Upon arrival this handstamp and charge were both crossed through, a red London Paid c.d.s and circular framed "PD" being applied. An uncommon group, Cairo uses unlisted by S.G. as the office used the "B01" numeral, therefore only identifiable on cover or piece with a Cairo c.d.s. (4). £260-300

  Panama/Peru - Callao. 1873 Cover from Conception, Chile to the USA sent via the British Post Offices in Callao and Panama, handstamped with a red Conception c.d.s, three line "PANAMA / 14 MY 1875 / TRANSIT" and the scarce "12" charge mark and New York arrival datestamp showing 24 cents due. Backstamped at Callao British P.O and upon arrival at New Bedford, Mass. The "12" charge mark was issued to the British P.O in Panama in 1870 (recorded used 1872-75) and indicates 12c due to Panama from the USA (to pay the postage from Peru to Panama). Surface fault at right due to the removal of a Chile stamp (which would have paid the postage to Peru); still a good example of this scarce Panama British P.O charge mark. £120-150

WORLDWIDE COVERS - A RETIRED DEALERS STOCK

The following 110 lots formed the stock of a retiring dealer specialising in postal history. They include many interesting items with village cancels, T.P.Os, maritime mail, military mail and unusual uses of stamps and postal stationery.
