Click to view full image... Angora - Australian Submarine A.E.2. 1917 Stampless cover to England endorsed "8284 P. Fawns E.R.A, late Submarine A.E.2, British Prisoner of War, Angora, Turkey" with a boxed censor cachet and London F.S Paid machine. The submarine A.E.2 was sent to Gallipoli where it sank a Turkish gunboat and penetrated into the Sea of Marmora; five days later it was forced to surface by mechanical failure and was scuttled after being attacked by a Turkish torpedo boat, the 34 crew all surviving. A scarce cover from an Australian submariner P.O.W in Turkey, just 210 Australians being captured by the Turks. Photo on Page 94. £300-350

Goulin, captured on the French submarine "Mariotte" which was forced to surface and scuttle after getting trapped in the Turkish anti-submarine net whilst trying to enter the Sea of Marmora.   1939-40 Covers and cards, various cachets and F.P.O datestamps, including three items from Swedish volunteers with "FALTPOST / S.F.K" or "S.F.K / FINLAND" datestamps or bearing a Swedish 15ore stamp tied by "HAPARANDA / F" c.d.s, and two covers from Danish volunteers, one sent during the Continuation War in 1943 with circular "FALTPOST / F" (usually used on Swedish volunteer mail, 7 months later than recorded by Moxter).   P.O.W Mail. 1940 Cover with enclosed letter from a Russian P.O.W P.G Martsuk in Camp 4, to his wife in the Ukraine, with the Finnish censors translation, the letter held back by the Finns and never sent. The letter tells of the writers capture on Christmas day. £80-100

  P.O.W Mail. 1942 Stampless picture postcard to London from A. Butler, a British volunteer who fought with the Finns during the Winter War, the card sent from Filipstad, Varmland, in Sweden where Butler was now interned. Sent via the British Consul in Sweden with a London S.W Paid c.d.s; the message refers to sending mail by both the British Consul and the Red Cross. Small edge tear at base, otherwise fine and scarce. Also a 1940 letter from the Finnish Aid Bureau in London sent to a British volunteer. (2). £100-120

  International Brigades. 1937 (June-Oct) Covers from a British volunteer with the International Brigade in Spain, all to Manchester, carried by courier to France and posted in Paris, three bearing French stamps, the other with a Paris meter mark, the first cover backstamped with boxed "S.C.C / 10 JUN 1939 / 111", the others with the small numbers "3", "41" or "42" on the reverse. Three covers a little roughly opened at the top edge, otherwise fine and scarce; Shelley did not record any courier service covers dated prior to August 1937. (4). £200-250

  c.1943 Cable & Wireless Ltd Telegram with message written and signed by Viscount Gort (Commander of the BEF in 1939-40, Governor of Malta 1942-44), to Winston Churchill at 13 Downing St. - "Here all well discussing problem of Dunkerking, arrangements being carried according to plans. Best regards, Gort". Supposedly written and sent after the conference to plan the D-Day attack. Folded, otherwise fine and unusual. £150-200

  Civil Censorship. 1939-47 Covers and cards with various censor cachets and seals from G.B, British Colonies, Germany, Europe, South America, etc., including air mails, 1940 (April 5) stampless card from Bergen to USA apparently caught up in the German invasion of Norway which occurred on April 9th with a German censor cachet, etc. Also a few later covers censored in Poland or Iraq.
