Byrd went on to lead five Antarctic expeditions between 1928 and 1956 as well as a successful Trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 and an unsuccessful attempt to fly to the North Pole in 1926. Francis Drake, the Assistant Postmaster, to Dr H.D Robertson at Wellington Hospital. Franked by Victoria Land ½d and 1d tied by the Antarctic c.d.s backstamped at Lyttelton (Feb 12). One of 47 letters sent at the request of Mr Robertson, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Dept. in Wellington, probably to his brother. Central stain spot at the upper edge, otherwise fine, a scarce use of the ½d stamp on cover. Photo on Page 23. £1,000-1,200

  1913 (Jan 18) Piece bearing the Antarctic c.d.s and the typed message "At the request of Mr Robertson, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, I am sending you a letter bearing a ½d stamp of this post office". 47 Covers bearing both stamps were posted with one of these typed letters enclosed. £100-120

The cover has then been posted at Blenheim on May 14th, registered to London, franked by N.Z KEVII 3d, with a Blenheim registration label applied, backstamped at Wellington. An unusual cover, sent to the Antarctic Stamp Dept., the office from which remainders of the Victoria Land stamps were sold under the supervision of Cmdr. Evans and Lt. Drake. Click to view full image... 1908 (Feb 27) Cover with "BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1907" printed on the flap, bearing a New Zealand 1d booklet stamp tied by the Antarctic c.d.s in green with a further strike alongside in black, applied on the "Nimrod" on its return voyage to New Zealand, addressed to J.J Kinsey in Christchurch. Kinsey has then applied a King Edward VII Land 1d C.T.O with the Antarctic c.d.s of MR 4 09 (used on the "Nimrod" at Cape Royds, the day the 1908-09 Expedition Post Office was closed), two Victoria Land 1d stamps C.T.O with the Antarctic c.d.s of 9 FE 11 or 31 JA 12 and a Victoria Land ½d pair C.T.O on FE 4 13, the final date of use of the Antarctic c.d.s, used on the "Terra Nova" on its final voyage back to New Zealand. A few stain spots and a couple of small edge tears but an interesting souvenir of these three famous Antarctic expeditions, the Victoria Land ½d scarce in used multiples, the stamps fine (S.G. £1,980 as used stamps).   1913 Leaflet issued by the Antarctic Stamp Dept. advertising Victoria Land stamps mint or used, the ½d at 25/- each and the 1d at 5/- each. Also a letter on Antarctic Stamp Dept. notepaper signed by the Secretary F. Hugh Vallancey sending the two stamps mint (for which 30/- was paid) and an impression of the postmark, and giving prices for various varieties found on the 1d including no stop and comma for a stop. Click to view full image... 1913 New Zealand KEVII ½d block of four with central "SOUTH POLE CARNIVAL DISASTER / CHRISTCHURCH / 24 FEB. 1913" datestamp in violet, light staining to a few perfs, otherwise fine and scarce. The carnival was held on this one day to raise funds for families of those who lost their lives on the expedition; very few examples of the special datestamp are recorded. Photo on Page 17. £150-180

Only five or six covers are believed to exist with any of the three boxed cancels used by the expedition; this cover especially scarce with the 2/6 value of which just 40 stamps were supplied to the exhibition. Beyrout/ Civilian Mail. 1918 (Nov 7) Cover from Beyrout to Cairo with "FIELD POST OFFICE / SZ8" skeleton c.d.s and manuscript "1pt" to show postage had been paid in cash, a 1p ultramarine stamp then added at Port Said and tied by superb "BASE ARMY POST OFFICE / T" skeleton c.d.s (Nov 13). The reverse with blue Opened by Censor label tied circular "PASSED BY CENSOR / No. 10" (a further strike on the front), with Port Said and Cairo datestamps. A fine and scarce civilian cover from the A.P.O at Beyrout prior to the availability of Palestine stamps. Photo on Page 29. £200-300
