  General Nivelle. 1916 (July 9) Stampless F.M cover from Paris with "2 ARMEE / LE GENERAL COMMANDANT" cachet, signed "Gnl. Nivelle", to his wife in Besancon. Nivelle commanded the French 2nd Army at the Battle of Verdun, was promoted to C. in C. of the French armies on the Western Front in December 1916 but was replaced in May 1917 following major mutinies in the French army. £80-100
