BEF Main Line T.P.O Down. 1919 (Jan. - June) Stampless picture postcards to London all written by Sapper Downton, a worker on the T.P.O which ran between Cologne and Boulogne, with 28mm skeleton c.d.s (4), 30mm skeleton c.d.s (3), 36mm skeleton c.d.s (2) or double ring c.d.s (5, two types), the skeletons with various settings and code letters. Also a proof strike of the 28mm skeleton on piece (4 Feb. 1919) and two fine real photos of the outside and the interior of the T.P.O carriage. A fine lot. (17). Photo on Page 81. £600-700

  R.A.F Air Mails. 1919 (July 22) Way bill for 15 sacks of mail flown by the R.A.F postal service from A.P.O S40 at Cologne to Lympne Aerodrome, Folkestone, signed by the pilot Lieut. Ramsay and by the mail guard L/Cpl. Haskell at A.P.O S106. The RAF postal service commenced on 1st March 1919 flying from Cologne to Hawkinge, but transferred to Lympne on July 22nd and ceased on August 31st. A unique way bill from the first flight to Lympne Aerodrome. £220-260

R.A.F Air Mails. 1919 (Aug 11/18) Stampless O.A.S covers signed by Brigadier General Potter to his wife in England, both inscribed "By air mail", with F.P.O H6 datestamps of Duren and censor cachets. Flown by the R.A.F air service from Cologne to Lympne near Folkestone. Very few covers actually show such evidence of having been flown. The service ceased at the end of August 1919. (2). Marienwerder/Danzig Plebiscite. 1920 (May 8) Registered cover to England with violet cachet "ALLIED ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION / BRITISH / SECTION / MARIENWERDER EAST PRUSSIA" (see Feb 28 2014 Argyll Etkin auction, lot 203 for a similar example of this cachet clearly showing the word "Marienwerder"), the cachet partly covered by G.B 2d tied by "FIELD POST OFFICE H2" c.d.s of Danzig with a further strike on the registration label, backstamped with two further F.P.O H2 datestamps and A.P.O S4 (May 10) of Cologne. A few small opening tears to upper edge, otherwise fine and a scarce registered cover from Marienwerder sent via the plebiscite F.P.O in Danzig, treated as official free mail but franked 2d to pay the registration fee. Click to view full image... Siege of Kut. 1915 (Dec 17) Cover franked 1d from Bournemouth addressed to "Capt Commanding A Coy 2nd Dorset Regt, 16th Infantry Brigade, 6th Poona Division, Indian Ex. Force, c/o Indian Office, London", returned with the scarce violet cachet "UNDELIVERED THROUGH / CAPITULATION AT KUT". The Iraqi city of Kut-el-Amara surrendered to the Turks on April 29th after a siege of 144 days, over 6,000 Indian and 2,000 British troops becoming P.O.Ws. Photo on Page 85. £150-200

General Townsend. 1915 Covers to Lady Peek or Captain Sir Wilfred Peek in Devon, both endorsed from "Charles Townsend, Major General, Comdng 6th Division, Expeditionary Force D" with datestamps of "BUSRAH" (May 1) or Indian F.P.O 55 (Oct 7), circular "PASSED / D / CENSOR". R.N.A.S. c.1915 Stampless picture postcard to England endorsed "On active service with Russian army" with a superb circular cyrillic cachet in violet which translates as "English Admiralty. Armoured Car Detachment", the picture side with a violet censor cachet. Minor staining and corner creases but an attractive and very scarce card; Units of 15 and 17 Squadrons of the R.N.A.S Armoured Car Division were sent to Russia in 1915 and fought with the Russians until 1917.
