The letter comprises an exceptional and detailed description of the battle, including "they opened their fire which was immediately returned by the whole fleet in such a manner as astonished them & so heavy and well directed was our fire that we soon drove them out of their works on that part of the Mole exposed to our fire. We then hauled round for our broadside to bear on the town & continued a most furious cannonade till near 12 o'clock when one of seven frigates which we had set fire to, very nearly drifted on board us, which had she done we must inevitably have been burnt, but miraculously at that moment a breeze sprang up which enabled us to get out of her way & drift her in again. We then, having silenced the batteries & destroyed part of the town, warped out again. We then found our rigging much cut up & 8 men only killed and 126 wounded .... The Consul whom they detained has just been on board, he describes the slaughter in town as dreadful, that at least 1500 have been killed & many thousands wounded .... The Impregnable, not having been able to take her station close enough, has suffered severely, about 50 killed & 200 wounded ...".
