  Four nineteenth century mail coach panels, each painted on metal with a crown and the coach number, two with "GR", another with "WR" (William IV), the last without the monarchs initials, presumably from the reign of Queen Victoria. Four rare and attractive items. (4). £1,200-1,500

  Metal cancellation devices comprising a French handstamp for "VIGNACOURT / SOMME" without date, and two German cancellers for "UELZEN (BZ HANNOVER 1)"; one a handstamp made in 1937 (with date 2.2.5), the other an unusual roller cancel with wavy lines dated 28.8.43. (3). £70-100

  1899 Page from a Victorian album with a well painted picture of a man in a kilt dancing, given to Mr Oliver Fraser of the Fraser Clan; the reverse bears the signatures of 13 people who attended the Queen's birthday dinner given at the British Consulate, Lourenco Marques, on May 24th, with three stamps and the Consulate handstamp attached. £80-100

Click to view full image... 1901 (Aug 6) Wrench's 'Links of Empire' British National Antarctic Expedition postcard No. 1 depicting Captain Scott and the "Discovery" with the usual "ANTARCTIC / EXPDN 1901 / S.S DISCOVERY" cachet on the front, exceptionally addressed by Ernest Shackleton to E. Douglas in London and signed "EH Shackleton" on the front, posted from Cowes on the day the ship departed, franked ½d blue-green. These cards were usually mailed to subscribers from London on August 1st; this is the only such card we have recorded sent from Cowes or sent by an actual expedition member, and is exceptional signed by Shackleton.   1901 Wrench's 'Links of Empire' British National Antarctic Expedition postcard No. 2 with Cape 1d cancelled at Cape Town (Oct 7) and postcard No. 3 with N.Z 1d cancelled at Lyttelton (Dec 24) both with the usual "ANTARCTIC / EXPDN / 1901 / S.S DISCOVERY" cachets on the front, both addressed to Karachi, India, with arrival datestamps of Tuticorin and Karachi. Card 2 also with a Durban c.d.s and card 3 with Christchurch and Colombo datestamps. Both cards with corner wear resulting in slightly rounded and creased corners, nevertheless an exceptional destination; most of these cards were sent to Britain and these are the first cards to India we have recorded. The short message is headed from H.M.S "Morning", and was written five weeks after the ship's return from the Antarctic; a month later the "Morning" left New Zealand for England via the Falkland Islands. Click to view full image... 1904 "Weeks Ltd" picture postcard illustrating the route taken from England to the Antarctic by the "Discovery" and "Morning" during the 1901-04 Antarctic Expedition, franked N.Z 1d booklet stamp tied by Lyttelton squared circle of 1st April, the day the two ships arrived back in New Zealand, signed by W. Colbeck, Captain of the "Morning". Addressed to J.J Kinsey, agent for the 1901-04, 1908-09 and 1910-13 Scott and Shackleton Antarctic Expeditions, in Christchurch with an arrival datestamp. Kinsey has subsequently applied a King Edward VII Land 1d and tied it by the "BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD / N.Z" c.d.s of MR 4 09 (the day "Nimrod" sailed back past Cape Royds and the final day of use of the 1908-09 Expedition c.d.s), and two Victoria Land 1d stamps each tied by the same Antarctic Expd. c.d.s for 9 FE 11 (when the "Terra Nova" was at Cape Evans) or 31 JA 12 (when the ship was in pack ice, en route from Robertson Bay to Cape Evans). Click to view full image... 1907 (Dec 21) Piece headed "P.O. No. 264 / MEMO." bearing proof impressions of the "BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD / N.Z" c.d.s and "BRIT. ANT. EXP. / (crown)" intaglio mailbag seal, applied on the day the two handstamps were manufactured. One similar piece is known and is illustrated in "New Zealand Antarctic Postal History to 1941" by R. Duns. A rare item; the c.d.s was not used on philatelic mail until 1st January 1908 (and expedition mail on Jan. 15th) whilst the mailbag seal is only known on these two 21 Dec. pieces. The KEVII Land stamps were not sold to the general public and only about 5% of the 24,000 printed stamps are estimated to have remained unused; this block is the largest known mint block of this issue.
