Click to view full image... DUNDEE - VERY RARE OVAL-FRAMED "SHIP LETTER/C[Crown]R/DUNDEE" MARK ON COVER (PROBABLY FROM GREENLAND) TO NORWAY; Fine 24 Apr. 1875 env. (red fancy "C.I.(?)S." wax seal; opened out for display) to "Tonsberg, Norway" charged "9[d]" with a mainly very fine oval-framed "SHIP LETTER/V[Crown]R/DUNDEE" mark nicely placed on the front along with a superb small matching "DUNDEE" c,d,s,; there is a very fine "CHRISTIANIA.OMG" c.d.s. (29 Apr.) on the flap and Norwegian crayon rates of "88" (blue) and then "34" (red). Only one other example of this very rare "V[Crown]R" type of Dundee (Rob.S2a) is recorded; it is on an 1867 envelope from a whaling ship at Jan Mayen Island. The
'Dundee Courier' of 26 April 1875 (copy of paragraph included) reports only two international vessels arriving there on 24 April, both were whaling ships from "Greenland" with cargoes of "blubber"; the 'Active' (Capt. Fairweather) and the 'Victor' (Capt. Nicoll). It seems very likely that this cover originated in Greenland and was sent by a Norwegian whaler crewman.
