GREAT WESTERN" UPRATED WITH 1d BLACK; Extraordinary 20 July 1840 usage of the Stereo A19 1d Black Mulready letter-sheet (minor dusting and one flap slightly reduced but most attractive) to "Brooklyn, New York" from "PETWORTH" (Sussex; mainly v. fine c.d.s. - manuscript "2" in date - on the front) cancelled by a partly fine red Petworth Maltese Cross, uprated by a Plate 2 1d Black (BE; clear margins all round but just touched at top left) tied (and through the stamp) by a matching large part red Maltese Cross; the letter was also partly paid in cash - red manuscript "P6" also on the front - to make up the standard 8d Ship Letter rate. Endorsed "Pr. [S.S.] Great Western" beneath the address and (in a different hand - at the P.O. presumably) "Ship Letter" and "via Bristol"; there is also a partial red "NEW YORK/SHIP" c.d.s.
