(fine red 2-ring d.s. on the front) to London endorsed "Pd through" & "Per B[ritish] Queen" with 2 Montreal red "PAID" marks beside "371/2" (US cents for double-sheet letter rate) and "9" (Canadian double-sheet rate; the Freight Money charge would have been prepaid as well but is not shown on mail from Montreal), having a fine London 26 Dec. arrival backstamp alongside mainly very fine red downward step-type framed "SHIP LETTER/GRAVESEND" (Rob.S8) on the flap. This was the only steamer from North America to arrive in G.B. during the 5-week 'Experimental' 4d Post Period when British rates were charged by weight while Canadian & US rates were still charged by the sheet; hence the British arrival charge is only "1/-" (the single 8d Ship Letter + 4d inland rate). Few 4d-Post Period covers from Canada are recorded. PHOTO - see page 40. £160
