The "AMERICA L" was struck at Liverpool on some Transatlantic mail but is scarce on mail from Canada. COVER TO UK - PREPAID AT THE 51c TRIPLE RATE VIA CUNARD LINE - CHARGED POSTAGE DUE ON ARRIVAL:1859 (14 May) E from Chippawa "Per Royal Mail Steamer Via Boston/18 May 1859" (carried on the Cunard line "Niagra" out of Boston - 18 May for Liverpool 29 May) to Suffolk bearing 1859 17c vertical pair & marginal single (originally a vertical strip of three - three wide margins, touched at left, lower stamp of pair with crease) all with m/s grid cancellations (Canadian postmasters were instructed NOT to use datestamps to cancel stamps). With a fine "MORE TO-PAY" h.s. and as an underpaid letter charged a deficiency of 8d plus 6d fine, making the "1/2d charged. A fascinating cover which illustrates the confusion over postage rates between Canada & UK regarding triple rate items. The cover also bears a GB 1860 (Sept) 4d customs duty stamp which clearly does not belong. Note: Canada converted to decimal currency on 1st July 1859 only three months after this cover was sent.
