The £1 with corner crease and tiny tear at right, otherwise fine. Also 1917 G.E.A 25c pane of 60 (the lower block of 12 separated) with plate number "1", one stamp with variety raised stop after "A". | 1922-31 Covers and cards (and one front) all bearing the 1922-25 Giraffe issues written up on album pages, including registered covers (6, one on Giraffe issue 50c postal stationery envelope), picture postcards (8), air mail covers with 1930 Daressalaam to Tanga First Flight franked 1/-, uprated KGV Head 15c envelopes and a German East Africa 4h postcard. Also Giraffe issue postal stationery comprising registration envelopes unused or overprinted "Specimen" (4), postcards or reply cards unused, used (2) or overprinted "Specimen". An interesting collection, one postcard cancelled on 9th August 1922, believed to be the earliest recorded date of use of this issue. (37). £1,000-1,200 |

| 1933 (June 30) Registered Air Mail cover from Mbeya to England franked by Giraffe 5/- (S.G. 86a, £85, x8 on cover) handstamped "By Air to / London", a very scarce commercial use of the 5/-; the extensive Cruttwell collection did not contain any Giraffe issue stamp above the 3/- value on cover. Cover faults to upper right corner and reverse, an attractive cover. £300-350 |

| Postal Stationery. 1922 Giraffe issue 15c + 15c reply card with large "SPECIMEN" overprint on both cards, handstamped with number "1923", believed to be from the U.P.U archives in Switzerland (corner crease), and 15c postcard with unusual small "SPECIMEN" overprint (12x2mm, Samuel type B6) across the stamp. This overprint was used in 1925 on the four new Giraffe issue stamps, and was presumably used at the same time on a small number of postal stationery items, distributed at this late date with the four new stamps. Air Mails. 1937 First Solo flight from Brisbane to Capetown by Mrs H.B Bonney, cacheted cover signed by Mrs Bonney and bearing Australia and Queensland stamps cancelled at Brisbane (Apr 8), flown as far as Tanganyika and then posted back to Brisbane bearing KUT 20c cancelled at Mbeya (July 31), backstamped at Brisbane (Sep 13). 1904 (Aug 20) Cover to England bearing India KEVII 1a pair each tied by "LHASSA" c.d.s, backstamps include fine "BASE OFFICE" c.d.s. Enclosed is a good four page letter written by Leonard A. Bethell from Lhassa (Aug 18), which includes "Ive not interviewed the Dalai Lama, nor have I even been inside the city. The former has made a hole in the horizon Chinawards fearing for his unwashed bacon and we aren't allowed into the town pending negotiations which are going forward. Some day perhaps we'll parade the town in full form and then I may be able to give you startling details of the private life of the Lord High Executioner, etc. There really is a L.H.E strange to say, and also he really does wear a little round button on the top ..... a description of Lhassa would resolve itself into ..... "tales of mean streets" judging by what Gyantse was like ..... Gorgonzola wouldn't be in it for sheer 'wiff'.... There are one or two large buildings & monasteries one of which is where the Dalai Lama lives, but the rest of the town consists of the usual low stone built houses roofed with mud and scattered about in what would be picturesque confusion but for the awful smell that obscures the air, kills all vegetation in the vicinity, and gives a faint blue tinge to the landscape ..... there are no local stamps to send you. Thibet doesn't boast a postal service .... we had some fairly stiff fighting before we got here; at Gyantse we were seeing red for most of the time - and my little men took the Jong after about 18 hours fighting. I suppose you know I've left the 16th Rajputs and have got with a Ghurkha Regt - the 8th...... My men are little darlings, cheery as the day is long + most mighty fighters, though messy in their methods withal. The sight of their foe doesn't interest them unless he be cut into small pieces and variously dissected according to the inspiration of the moment. I wish you could see them at it!"
