Constantinople/Forwarding Agents. 1840-48 Entire letters from Constantinople to Genoa (2) or Scotland all disinfected at Semlin with circular "SANITATIS SIGILLUM" (2) or "NETTO DI FUORA ET DI DENTRO" arms cachets, also with part wax seals impressed with the Lazaretto seal. All three sent via Constantinople forwarding agents with cachets (2, including superb Michele Berzolese F.A.C) or endorsement of Antonio Berzalese, the letters to Genoa privately carried or landed as ship letter at Genoa, the 1847 entire letter to Scotland with fine two line "CONSTANTINOPLE / 24 NOVEMBRE" French P.O datestamp. Nova Scotia. 1833 Entire letter from the Provincial Secretary's Office at Halifax to the Health Officer at Arichat, the address panel signed "R.A George" and endorsed "Free", contents regarding quarantine regulations for vessels arriving from Ireland, where cholera is raging. Also 1849 entire letter from Halifax to Quebec, telling of the death from cholera of Capt. Blais on the "Virginie", as a consequence of which the ship has been placed in quarantine. (2). £80-120

China

1886 Printed "Bill of Health, Port of Foochow" issued by H.B.Ms Vice-Consul certifying that the S.S "Glamis Castle" had left the Port of Foochow with no infectious disease on board, and that no infectious or epidemic disease existed or was suspected to exist in the port or its vicinity. Bearing British Consular Service $3 revenue stamp (issued for use in China and Japan) tied by Vice Consulate Foochow arms handstamp. Folded (with one fold through the revenue stamp) otherwise fine, a scarce and unusual revenue document. £200-250

Martinique/USA. 1824 Entire letter from Martinique to Rouen handstamped "MARTINIQUE" and "COLONIES / PAR BORDEAUX", light staining, apparently caused by disinfection at Bordeaux. Also 1832 entire letter from the USA to the U.S Frigate "Brandywine", c/o U.S Consul at Marseille, with boxed "PAYS D'OUTREMER / PAR LE HAVRE" and two 33mm chisel slits. (2). £100-120

1820-84 Entire letters all apparently disinfected in France all with chisel slits, four also with staining probably caused by splashing with vinegar, from France to Spain (2) or Italy (1884, a late example of disinfection), Spain to London via Bayonne (1820), England to Spain via France (1833) or Ireland to Italy via France (1835). Also 1767 Bill of Lading for the Brigantine "Les Bonsamis" carrying goods from Smyrna to Marseille, stained by disinfection. (7). £140-180

POLTEN" and backstamped with circular "KOENIGL / BAYERISCHES / SANITAETS / SIEGEL" (a little blurred as usual), and 1831 entire letter from Glasgow prepaid to Jonnkoping, Sweden "via Hambro Steamer" with London and Hamburg ship letter datestamps and Hamburg Swedish P.O datestamp, both letters pierced by rastel holes. Forwarding Agent. 1849 Entire letter from the Captain of the Russian Ship "Catharina" at Gibraltar to Huth & Co in London endorsed "pr S.P Jupiter" and "Received & forwarded by y.o.s Archbold Johnston & Powers, Gibraltar, 4 Nov, 1848" with Gibraltar datestamp, disinfected with two 26mm chisel slits. £150-180

Mail to Portugal. 1821-33 Entire letters to Portugal all disinfected with various length chisel slits (4), one letter with both 18mm and 28mm slits. Also 1832 entire letter sent to London and redirected to Lisbon with boxed "GIBRALTAR", contents including "cannot proceed to Granada as the infernal cholera is there and would subject me to 50 days Quarantine"; and 1833 (April 25) "Gibraltar Chronicle" with a proclamation concerning the fumigation of all vessels and mail arriving from Portugal, Cuba, Madeira or the Azores. ROQUE / BRANCA" and black "ESPAGNE PAR / ST JEAN-DE-LUZ" handstamps, both disinfected by soaking in vinegar with an 18mm chisel slit and boxed "LAZZERETTO SAN / ROCCO DI LIVORNO" cachet, the 1833 letter also with a complete black wax seal impressed with the San Rocco lazaret arms seal. 1862 Entire letter from Genoa to the Italian Consul at Gibraltar warning of an outbreak of yellow fever in Santa Cruz de Teneriffe with differing "R. POSTE / DIREZIONE / DI / SANITA MARITTA / IN GENOVA" cachets on front and reverse, blue boxed "CERDENA" and "4R", red "I.S.P" and datestamps of Genova and Gibraltar, a fine and attractive official cover to Gibraltar. Also 1865 entire letter to Paris with two 25mm chisel slits, transit datestamps of San Roque and St. Jean-de-Luz, charged 6 decimes. (2). £100-120

Free Frank to Italy. 1832 Entire letter from Mary Drinkwater to her brother Captain Drinkwater R.N in Florence, redirected to Rome and then back to Florence, the address panel signed by John Drinkwater and headed as a free letter with a red "FREE" datestamp, various Italian handstamps and postal rates added. The letter disinfected with heavy vinegar staining, handstamped "Sopritendza Gle- / di Sanita a Firenze". An unusual free frank sent abroad and disinfected. £100-120

Acts comprising 1753 Act to oblige ships to perform quarantine, 1772 Act concerning the establishment and construction of Lazarets, and 1800 Act for erecting a Lazaret on Chetney Hill, Kent. Also two 1811 letters to Cobb & Co in Margate discussing Quarantine Duty, or informing him of the release of a ship from quarantine. (5). £60-80

Motherbank. 1814 Entire letter from H.M.S "Blenheim" off Madeira, to Wales, with oval "SHIP LETTER / PORTSMOUTH" (Robertson S10), disinfected at Motherbank with two widely spaced 20mm chisel slits. Fine and scarce, few covers recorded disinfected at Motherbank. £150-200

St. Just Pool, Falmouth. 1806 Entire letter from Antigua to Clement Tudway M.P at Wells "by the Packet", backstamped circular "FALMOUTH PACKET LRE" (Rob. P1), showing clear disinfection by scorching at Falmouth. Also 1815 entire letter from Gibraltar to London with red curved "GIBRALTAR", carried to Falmouth by the "Duke of Montrose" Packet with staining on the address panel, possibly the result of disinfection at Falmouth. Very little mail is recorded disinfected at St. Just Pool whilst disinfected mail from the West Indies is also very unusual. (2). £180-240

Sent from Holland by private ship to Queenborough with a fine strike of scarce "SHIP LETTER / QUEENBORO" (Rob. S5) on reverse, again disinfected at Standgate Creek by soaking in vinegar. A fine and scarce twice disinfected letter. £350-400

Waghorn Forwarding Agent. 1838 Entire letter from Bombay to Ireland endorsed "To England via Red Sea by the Steamer Atalanta from Bombay" sent by Waghorn's service across Egypt with fine boxed "To the care of / MR WAGHORN" on reverse alongside circular "PURIFIE AU LAZARET / MALTE" with two 27mm chisel slits, charged 3/81/2, increased to 4/1 upon redirection within Ireland. Other handstamps include oval framed "INDIA", red oval framed "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERRANEE", boxed "INDEE ORIEN / PAR / ALEXANDRIE", boxed "BRITISH (1.10) / FOREIGN (1.101/2)", and datestamps of the French P.O in Alexandria, London, Dublin, Derry and Strabane. French Occupation. 1810 Entire letter to Nice from the Pay Master of the 14th Light Infantry in Corfu reporting the death of a soldier, with scarce circular "POSTA SETTINSULARE / CORFU" handstamp in green, disinfected by scorching. Corfu was occupied by the French from 1799 until 1814. £300-350

1816 Printed proclamation issued by the Governor of Corfu listing people and places infected by the plague, and 1824 printed proclamation issued by His Majestys High Commissioner in the Ionian Islands regarding the outbreak of plague in Albania. Also 1842 entire letter from Corfu to Naples with oval "AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO / Ancona" handstamp applied in transit and a green Corfu datestamp, disinfected with three 22mm chisel slits and boxed "Sanita in Ancona / Netto Fuorie dentro", and 1885 10 lepta postcard from Corfu to Cape Colony disinfected with two 28mm chisel slits and scarce red cachet "POSTCARDS TO THIS ADDRESS / CANNOT BE FORWARDED" applied in London, unfortunately with corner faults, one corner torn off but still present and could be repaired.
