England/Germany. 1831 Entire from Hamburg to London via Holland, disinfected at Brielle by splashing with vinegar, also backstamped red "GEZUIVERD" with three 19mm chisel slits, apparently disinfected a second time with five punch holes, either at Hamburg or in England. Charged 6/8 with a fine strike of the uncommon dotted boxed "oz at 6/8 per oz" applied in the London Foreign Branch. £150-180

Persia

Disinfected in Austria. 1826 Entire privately carried to London and posted in the 2d post, then redirected to Inverness charged 2/10, disinfected with rastel holes and circular "NETTO DI FUORA E SPORCO DI DENTRO" arms cachet of Semlin, with recipients filing endorsement showing the letter was from "Major Monteith, Persia, Aug. 22 1826." Major William Monteith of the Madras Engineers went to Persia with the British Mission in 1810. When the Mission left in 1810 he continued in the service of the Persians, serving with their forces in the Wars against Russia and Turkey, and on the 1821 Persian-Turkey Boundary Commission and the Russo-Persian Boundary Commission of 1829. He left Persia in 1829, wrote a book on the 1826-28 Persian Campaign against Russia and retired from the Indian Army as a Lt.-General in 1854. An early letter from Persia. £80-100

1914 Cover franked 1d from G.B to the S.S "Carpathia" at New York, and 1931 cover franked Canada 3c sent from Toronto to the S.S "Olympic" arriving at New York, both with differing "Sent to Quarantine" cachets applied to show that the ship was in quarantine and delivery of the mail would therefore be delayed. Also 1909 picture postcard from Mont Alto, Pa. franked 1c, written by a patient in the Sanatorium, handstamped violet "DISINFECTED". An unusual trio. (3). £150-180

Posted from Ross to the anti-vaccination campaigner Joseph Abel in Faringdon franked by a 1d red. The upper edges strengthened internally with a piece of paper, otherwise fine and a very attractive hand coloured example of this scarce propaganda envelope, which is previously unrecorded with the printed message on the flap. £1,500-2,000

1922-24 Covers, cards and a few pieces with "British Empire Exhibition 1924" machine slogan cancels with continuous Krag machines and single Hey Dolphin machines with both single ring and double ring town dies. The very comprehensive collection with all machine types from all offices of use, most well written up on pages. Covers include Krags used on the first day of use from Bradford (10 Oct 22) and Exeter (11 Oct 22), and used on printed matter with telegraphic codes within a triangle in place of the town die from Cardiff (code CF), Brighton (code BR) and Preston (code PR), also the similar single Hey Dolphin machine from London with triangular code EDO. Flap missing and a tiny piece torn from top edge upon opening, not affecting the fine appearance of this cover. One of the rarest of all the Colonial British Empire Exhibition slogans, just a handful of covers recorded, mostly from this one correspondence to Sussex. £500-600
