| Larnaca - Numeral "942". 1879 (May 1) Entire letter to Alexandria franked 1d red plate 209 pair and 21/2d rosy mauve plate 13 (unfortunately severely damaged at left edge) each tied by "942" numeral, with superb boxed "PAID / LATE FEE" and "LARNACA / CYPRUS" c.d.s alongside, backstamped at Alexandria. A spectacular and rare cover despite the faults to the 21/2d stamp, and "nulle" written in blue crayon on the address panel. This Paid Late Fee handstamp was despatched from London on April 4th, just 27 days before this letter was posted; this is one of just two examples recorded used before the issue of Cyprus stamps in 1880. £1,500-2,000 |
