Hutchins" with the rate reduced to 10d (prepaid), and handstamped by the very scarce oval datestamp "REBATE / 23 NO 23 / 1839 / INLAND OFFICE" (Willcocks/Jay 298, only recorded in 1839). Backstamped by Bristol Py Post datestamp (Nov 20) and in London upon the initial delivery (Nov 21), return to the Inland Office (Nov 23) and the redelivery on Nov 26th, with "T.P / Rate 2d" handstamp. | Thomas Bruce, third Earl of Elgin and second Earl of Ailesbury, courtier to James II who accompanied the King to Rochester when he fled London; he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1690 and again in 1696 when he was accused of conspiring to restore Kings James II to the throne. 1725 Entire letter written by Bruce from Brussels to his niece at Foxley near Hereford with "JA/25" Bishop Mark. Bruce was released from the Tower in 1697 and allowed to go to Brussels where he died in 1741. £250-300 |

| 1932 (Jan 27) Illustrated Springbok Imperial Airways cover from Cape Town to London for the return flight of the first air mail between England and South Africa. The mail on the "City of Basra" left Cape Town on 29th January 1932 but crashed at Salisbury, Rhodesia from where it was transferred to the "City of Delhi" but this aircraft was forced down into a bog during a storm near Broken Hill from where the mails was transferred to the "City of Baghdad" to complete its journey. The S.S "Cairo" ran aground at the entrance to the port at Alexandria on 6th March 1905, the mail bags which had been stacked on deck were washed away, but 51 bags were later recovered. The S.S "Cairo" ran aground at the entrance to the port at Alexandria on 6th March 1905, the mail bags which had been stacked on deck were washed away, but 51 bags were later recovered.
