| 1877 1/2d Brown postcard essays on thick card (121x74mm), each entirely handpainted in brown watercolour, one with the handpainted stamp in the issued design, the other two with similar design stamps but incorporating differing corner ornaments. All three have the heading "Post Card" in the style of the issued card, but have the coat of arms, border designs and instruction "The Address Only To Be Written On This Side" differing from the card that was issued in 1878. The three essays are accompanied by a letter written and signed by Warren De La Rue to W.H. Cousins at the Inland Revenue - "My dear Sir, Together with the sketches you returned me yesterday I herewith enclose you two fresh designs marked at the back A and B respectively for the proposed modified postcard. The design A is in our view a great success. We have reduced the border in width as much as possible, but as I explained to you verbally we could not place it nearer the edge of the card without considerably increasing the cost of production."
