| Ingoing Mail. 1822 Part entire letter (side flaps removed) from Scotland addressed to "Mr Robert Moffat, Missionary, Lattakoo, South Africa, care of Revd. Dr Philip, Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope", endorsed "Paid 1/41/2" and charged 2d in the Cape. Backstamped "INVERKEITHING / 109-E" with red "PAID in the / COUNTRY / FEB 17 1822" of Edinburgh, a Paid datestamp of London, and red oval "POST PAID SHIP LR / LONDON" datestamp. Robert Moffat, father in law of David Livingstone, became Superintendent of the mission station at Lattakoo in 1820. Minor soiling, otherwise fine and exceptionally rare, being the earliest recorded item of mail into Bechuanaland, predating the earliest recorded item from the country by some six years (see lot 412). £900-1,000 |

| Ingoing Mail. 1880 Cover from Grahams Town franked Cape 1d, 3d, addressed to "Rev. J.S. Moffat, c/o A. Spranger Esquire, Zeerust Marico, Transvaal", backstamped at Grahams Town (Sep 3) and Potchefstroom (Sep 9). The addressee John Smith Moffat founded the Protectorate Runner Post mail service connecting Mafeking to Bulawayo; the post began in August 1888 and was the first scheduled internal mail service of the northerly Protectorate. This cover sent to Zeerust on the extreme northwestern border of the Transvaal, from where it would have been forwarded by the Zeerust mission station to the addressee, who resided at Molepolole 100 miles further inland. Flap missing and minor edge faults, a scarce destination. £90-110 |

| 1828 Part entire letter (side portions removed and seal cut from reverse) endorsed from "Lattakoo 15 Feb 1828, Robt. Moffat", the address panel signed "Moffat" in the corner and addressed to "Mr G. Hodson, Mission House, Austin Friars, London, care of Revd R. Miles, Church Square, Cape Town" ("care of ..... Cape Town" crossed out upon redirection to London) with two superb "POST OFFICE / CAPE / TOWN / GENERAL" datestamps (Apr 3 and Apr 12). Rated "4" and red "1/1", both crossed out and charged 1/- in London, backstamped by boxed "INDIA LETTER / DOVER" and a London arrival c.d.s (June 23). Moffat asks the directors of the Missionary Society to consider "sending another missionary to this station, who is a good scholar capable of rendering important assistance to the cause when the work of translation is going on". He continues, "shortly after Mr Miles return I commenced the school in the natives language ...... there are already 4 Bechuanas who can read well in the catechism". Robert Moffat, father in law of David Livingstone, became a missionary for the London Missionary Society in Namaqualand in 1816; in 1820 he became Superintendent of the mission station at Lattakoo, which was moved to Kuruman in 1825. David Livingstone. 1843 Entire letter written by Dr. David Livingstone from "Mabotsa, 1st Sept. 1843" (located between the Marico and Molopo Rivers, north of Mafeking), addressed to "Revd. John McRobert, Cambuslang near Glasgow, for Mrs McRobert" and inscribed "care of Revd. Dr Phillip, Cape Town" (crossed out upon forwarding to Glasgow). Rated "2/2" in red and charged 8d upon arrival, marked "unpaid", backstamped "SHIP LETTER" with datestamps of London (Mar 1 1844) and Glasgow. A remarkable four-page letter in which Livingstone describes the establishment of the mission at Mabotsa - "the natives profess to be very glad we have come to live amongst them ....... now we may be said to have really commenced missionary activities in the interior". He refers to the Matabele Chief Mosilikatse "who will refrain from attacking them", and gives an account of local works and religious attitudes of the people. He reports on the progress of the native agent, Mabalwe, for whom Mrs McRobert provided funds (Mabalwe was to save Livingstone's life in 1844 when he was mauled by a lion), he describes the countryside surrounding Mabetse "with mountains which remind me strongly of Scotland", and writes of the impending arrival of Rev. Robert Moffat. Livingstone arrived in Cape Colony as a missionary of the London Missionary Society in 1840, and made various expeditions into the interior between 1841 and his death in 1872. He severed his connections with the L.M.S in 1857, after which he became Consul at Quelimaine and led several expeditions to explore central and eastern Africa. Also a transcript of a Sept. 1842 letter from Livingstone at Kuruman to the McRobertses, and another of Dec 1842 to Livingstone's father, dealing with fighting amongst the tribes and hostilities towards the missionaries, captioned "Extracts of a third and fourth letter from Africa". Some edge wear, otherwise fine and an important and rare Livingstone letter from Bechuanaland.
