Enclosed is an extraordinary letter - "Zambesi River, on Road to German East. Remember your promise. Dear Col. Crewe, awful from a discipline point of view. I am a pte writing by candlelight in an overcrowded barge where fights and arguments are going on. No rest, no rooster, no nothing. Col Rodger DSO is comfortable, also Capt Calvert (Kimberley). When one barge gets stuck we pull it out. Heat terrific, iron barges, bread like rock, no system whatsoever. Have just come off a 24 hour guard. The Cpl was too lazy to relieve & no surprising so did more than my whack unnecessarily. Where did you get these NCOs from? Signallers good but disgusted.
