  1846 (Sep 1) Entire from London to Auckland prepaid 1/-, carried on the Toulmin Packet "Sydney" from Falmouth to Sydney and then on the "Avoca" to Auckland, with fine "NEW-ZEALAND" double arc datestamp (Feb 18) on the front, horizontal file fold, otherwise fine. £100-120

  1848 Part entire to Sydney prepaid 4d with a fine red "PAID / AT / AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND" crowned circle, Auckland and Sydney backstamps, the letter includes "I am over here in charge of the sick of the enrolled pensioners, old soldiers with their wives and families which on some new Government scheme have been sent out here and are treated in villages near this place - in one of the four ships 49 died on the passage. They themselves will be of little use but their children who amount to 500 will be at a future time", address panel with a little ink staining, otherwise fine. Also 1851 entire (faults, corner hole to address panel) from Kangakatiu, written by a former soldier who has left the army after paying £4, and now works as a shoe maker, he also tells of having received a musket shot to the shoulder blade.   1849 (Dec 20) Entire letter from the Bishop of New Zealand (signed "G.A. NZealand") written from St. Johns College in Auckland, to The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in London, endorsed "England by Thomas Hyde" with fine red "PAID / AT / AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND" crowned circle and an Auckland backstamp, prepaid 2d, charged 1/4 in London. The four page letter details how the Society's £1,000 grant has been used and gives the balance sheet of the college. £120-140

  1884 Large cover to England headed "From W. Lockbert CC, HMS Swiftsure, Pacific" and countersigned but franked at the full civilian rate by G.B 1d lilac strip of four cancelled by "PANAMA / C35" British Post Office duplexs (May 3), faults include three large edge tears, still a very unusual and very reasonable looking cover from a British naval ship in the Pacific. £150-180

PERSIA
The following three letters were written by James or George Johnstone on a journey through Russia (see lots 1424, 1425) and Persia to India, and are addressed to Britain. Also see lot 1348.

  1833 (Nov 13) Entire letter written on superb headed notepaper depicting the Kremlin in Moscow ("Vue Generale du Cremlin" lithographed by L. de Peler, published by "Chez Beckers"), from James Johnstone at Tabreez, addressed to "Mrs Skinner, 22 Portland Place, London", disinfected at Semlin with handstamp and wax seal, hand delivered. The four page letter describes Johnstone's journey through Germany to St. Petersburg where he met the Emperor, stayed as his guest at the Palace of Gatchina, and watched the army manoeuvres involving 60,000 troops, his subsequent travels to Moscow, Novgorod, across the Steppes to Tcher Kask, and across the Caucasus in a caravan of Armenians and officers going to join the army with an escort of 120 Cossack infantry and 12 cavalry with two guns, through Tiflis, until his arrival at Tabreez. A fine and interesting early letter from Persia on attractive Russian headed notepaper, with a transcript of the letter. £500-600

The four page letter describes the view of the Kremlin in detail, the horses and customs in Russia, and their journey from Moscow to Tula, across the Steppes and the Caucasus Mountains to Tiflis, into Persia, Tabreez and Teheran. Johnstone describes the horses, inns, scenery and customs in Persia; he is staying with the British Envoy Sir John Campbell and has been presented to the Shah. A fine and interesting early letter from Persia on attractive Russian headed notepaper, with a transcription of the letter. Photo on Page 202. £600-700

  1833 (Dec 29) Entire letter from James Johnstone in Isphahan, addressed to Andrew Stone in Edinburgh, privately carried to England and posted in London, disinfected en route at Semlin with a fine handstamp and wax seal. Johnston reports delays to his journey, and will not arrive at Bombay until mid-February, and so will not return via Egypt until October; he describes the pitiful state of Persia and its people, Isphahan alone possessing a splendour and beauty. A fine and scarce early letter from Persia. £300-350

  1892-93 £5 Sage-green and £10 brown, and 1898-1908 £5 deep blue and £10 lilac all in unused blocks of four without gum, the 1892 £5 block with small faults to the lower pair and the £10 block with toning to upper pair, both 1898 blocks fine, all good colour. All four blocks mounted with hinges and framed, with card surround and printed headings and explanation, presented to a former director of Anglo-American, the successors to the British South Africa Company. RUSSIA
The following two letters are written by James Johnstone, whilst travelling with his brother George through Russia and Persia (see lots 1411-1413) to India. Also see lot 1348.

  1833 (Oct 6) Entire letter from "Tiflis in Georgia" to Edinburgh, the address panel signed "J.D Bligh", charged 2/2. Johnstone writes from the last place on his route where there is a direct and certain post to Great Britain; he deals with business, and has learnt the England Mission is no longer at Tabreez but has moved to Teheran, where he must proceed. An early letter from Georgia. £100-120
