THE MEDALS OF COLONEL H P SYKES 2nd DG & DENBIGHSHIRE YEO. Queens South Africa medal with four bars, Relief of Mafeking-Paardeburg-Transvaal-South Africa 1901. Named to Captain H P Sykes 2nd Drag. British War & Victory medals named to Lt Col H P Sykes. Territorial War medal named to Lt Col H P Sykes Denbigh.Yeo. Unnamed as issued, 22 June 1911 Coronation medal. The five mounted for wear with matching miniatures, also mounted for wear. A related bronze shooting medal 20th Cheshires Second Best Shot medal, on clasp and ribbon, V R on the floral bar. Lt Colonel H P Sykes was the eldest son of Thomas Hardcastle Sykes DL.JP. (who died in 1901) of Cringle House, Cheadle. Born in 1865 Harold Platt Sykes married 1st 1895 Frances McDonald of Keppoch, daughter of D P McDonald. (Who died in 1901). Secondly in 1903 to Winifred youngest daughter of Colonel W H C Wellesey Royal Fusiliers. Son and heir Lt Col Peter Thomas Wellesey Sykes. Lt Colonel Sykes served on the Staff in the South African War also with the 2nd Dragoon Guards and was Mentioned in Despatches in 1901. He was at one time seconded to the British South African Constabulary, whilst rounding up fugitive Boers. Retiring as a Captain in 1903, he later commanded the Denbighshire Yeomanry from 1910 until 1917. Later served in the Territorial Force Reserve with the rank of Lt Colonel. High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1931. He served with his regiment in Egypt from 3/3/1916, medals confirmed on the MIC cards. Retired from the TF in 1921/22. Also with the medals are three Commission Documents 4th Cheshires/ 2nd Dragoon Gds/ Denbighshire Hussars 1908. Letters Lt Col Sykes including one from his brother Alan Sykes MP. Mafeking Dinner 1908 menu. Letter from a fellow Denbighshire Yeomanry officer, when he was evacuated home for treatment. A photocopy of his privately printed diary, of The Relief of Mafeking. May 1900 for private circulation only. Telling the firsthand story of the Battles and Sorties between May 4th and May 17th 1900, when the relief was achieved. A set of 7 postcards of the Denbighshire Yeomanry at Camp in June 1914 with Lt Col Sykes at the fore. A reproduced photograph from an original in 2nd DG uniform C1890's. See Illustration £600-800

THE MEDALS OF COL S BOGLE-SMITH CB. CBE. EISERNEN KRONE etc. A Military Companion of the Bath, Military Commander of the British Empire, Queens South Africa medal with five clasps. Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & SA 1902. Engraved naming to Col S Bogle-Smith 1st Dragoon Gds. (The medal is the correct size.) A 1914/15 Star impressed naming to Col S Bogle-Smith Remount Service. British War medal later engraved issue to Col S Bogle-Smith. (Again in the correct size-with naming used by RAF and late issues in style). Victory medal impressed to Col S Bogle-Smith with MID emblem. An Austrian Eisernen Krone II Classe, with case of issue (damaged but complete). A neck order of the Austrian Empire, with blue and gold ribbon. British War & Victory medals named in correct style to Lt J A Bogle-Smith. India General Service medal bar Afghanistan NWF 1919, impressed naming to Lt J.A.Bogle-Smith 1.K.D.Guards. General Service Medal bar Iraq, impressed naming to Lt J.A.Bogle-Smith. Colonel Stewart Bogle-Smith was Educated at Eton (1878) as was his son John A Bogle-Smith 1915. Both of whom served in the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards. Col Smith was born 11/7/1859. Commissioned Lt from Militia into the Worcester Regt 28/2/1883. Lt 1st D Gds 29/2/1888. Capt 1st D Gds 17/2/1892. Mjr D Gds 14/6/1898. Adjudant Yeomanry Cavalry 15/111895-31/12/1900. War Service 1907 Army List: Col (HP) Operations in the Transvaal, Orange River Colony and Cape Colony. Despatches LG 29/7/1902 CB Queens Medal with Five Clasps. Up to this time in the Army Lists he is shown as Col S B Smith. In the Regt History Capt Bogle-Smith married a local girl (1895) lived at Woolverston Park, Ipswich. During the Boer War Major S Bogle-Smith was a Prisoner of War to the Boers 14th February 1901. Lt (J A) Bogle-Smith was mentioned in the Regt History during actions in the Khyber Pass, as occupying a conical hill and driving the tribesmen off. Five D Gds Officers were awarded the CB for services in the Boer War, including S Bogle-Smith. L Gazette 31/10/1902. MID x 2 for the GT War 4/1/17 and 5/7/19 CBE In 1903 when the Regiment returned to England, Lt-Col Bogle-Smith took over as the Colonel of the Regt. He handed over Command in June 1906. In 1908 The Emperor Franz Josef ordered awards to be made to Officers and men from his (British Regiment). This was his Diamond Jubilee Year. Colonel B-Smith was awarded the Eisernen Kronen 2nd Class. In the Gt War Col B-Smith served with the Remount Service. Awarded CBE. Lt J A B-Smith was restored to the establishment February 1925. A silver plated K D Gds figure, standing on a marble plinth. It is possible Lt J B Smith was the model, used for the sitting. A plaque underneath records thats it was presented for their 25 wedding anniversary in 1920. A second plaque records Lt James Anstruther Bogle Smith France 1915-18, Afghanistan 1919. 'Well Done'. Both plaques are silver with HM London 1919-20. With the medals is the original receipt for purchase from D Hall of Baldwins 1962 for £32.10s.0d Don stated the QSA as (renamed) not as a replacement. Col Bogle-Smith died in 1922, his wife applied for his medals at that time. MIC. See Illustration £3000-4000

THE QUEEN'S VISIT TO EPPING FOREST 1882 MEDALLION etc. Green leather cased bronze 75mm diameter medallion, commemorating the Queen giving Epping Forest to the nation. Ch Wiener Fecit to the right of the Queen on the obverse. Epping Forest 6th May 1882 below the woodland path etc. It gives me the greatest satisfaction to dedicate this beautiful forest for the use and enjoyment of my people for all time.
