AN ARMY OF INDIA MEDAL. An Army of India medal with two bars, Capture of Deig and Battle of Deig. Purchased from Baldwins in 1978, the naming is almost completely erased. The medal may be the one won by Alexander Main of the 76th Foot, from what is legible on the rim. In 1924 the medal was in the possession of Miss M G Main of Wimborne Dorset, a descendant of Alex Main. See Illustration £1000-1500 |

AN MGS TO THE 76th FOOT. A Military General Service Medal with single bar Nive, officially named to T, Norman, Serjt 76th Foot. Thomas Norman is confirmed on the roll as this single clasp only. Born in St Marys Parish Nottingham, he enlisted in the summer of June 1797 aged 23 years. Signing on for unlimited service he gave his former trade as frame-work knitter. If he joined the 76th Ft straight away he may have been present at the Campaigns in 1803 and Deig 1804. If he had been alive still in 1851, he may have claimed his entitlement. His MGS was issued 34 years after the Peninsular War. 99 Officers and men of the 76th Foot received the Nive Clasp. See Illustration £700-1000 |

AN MGS TO THE 76th FOOT. A Military General Service Medal with single clasp Corunna, officially named to G Langton 76th Foot. George Langtons name first appeared on the muster in October 1807. He is shown as joining the regular army from the Nottingham Militia. A native of nottingham he would have served firstly in Jersey with the 76th Foot. The son of George Langton and Ann Langton he was baptised at St Marys Parish, Nottingham in October 1789. After brief service in England he would have gone to Spain where he was awarded the MGS with Corunna claps. He served in the Ill fated Walcheron expedition after the Regimant being withdrawn in 1809 from Spain. Upon return from the Netherlands they were posted to Ireland. In 1811 George Langton was posted to recruiting duties, until his time expired in 1814. See Illustration £700-1000 |

A WATERLOO MEDAL TO THE 33rd FOOT. A Waterloo medal with asterisks each end of the official naming, Pte H Barbar 33rd Regiment Foot. Henry Barbar was born in Atherton Lancashire, a cordwainer by trade prior to his enlistment. (Goat Skin Leatherworker). In May 1811 he was attested to the 33rd Foot in Portsmouth aged 21 years. As the Regiment was returning home from India, he was sent to the Depot at Hull. In July 1812 he joined the Regiment and rose quickly through the ranks, Corporal in May 1812 and Sergeant in October 1812. However the rise was to end in April 1813, broken from Sergeant to Private, where stayed for 12 years. He served with the Regiment in Stralsond and Rostock before returning to England in 1813. Sailing to Holland in December 1814, he was present at the Storming of Bergen and the Capture of Antwerp. Then onto the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In 1822 he was promoted Corporal again and in 1825 Sergeant. Whilst serving with his Regiment in Jamaica, he was in the 'Ocean' a Transport that struck the Reef off Antigua. During his service there he took part in many minor actions against rebelling natives. He was discharged in 1830 'Owing to illness contracted in Jamaica'. Brought from Liverpool Medal Co in 1981, the naming runs from 2 o'clock onwards. The medal has been worn, with many knocks etc evident. See Illustration £2000-2500 |

A PUNJAB MEDAL 2/1 BOMBAY ARTILLERY. The Punjab medal with two clasps Goojerat amd Mooltan, officially named to Bombr Robt Wolfe, 2nd Co, 1st Battn Artillery. Whilst attacking the Fortress of Mooltan City, the reinforcements including Wolfes Bombay Artillery made the difference. Some of the walls were 70 ft high and strong. The city finally fell in January 1849, and the march to join General Gough's force began. Averaging 20 miles a day in temperatures of 130 degrees F, they marched for three weeks solid. On the 18th February the combined force beat the enemy at Chennah River. The Battle of Goojerat smashed the Sikh Army, though mopping up was to take much longer. See Illustration £400-600 |

A Turkish Crimea with old naming on the rim, Number 3449 Pte C Palmer 33rd D.W.Regt. The impressed naming is in the style of the MGS medal, the Turkish Crimes is engraved in upright capitals. AN OFFICERS CRIMEA WAR PAIR. Single bar Crimea medal to Lt C W Willis 33rd foot, engraved naming in upright capitals, Chas Whately Willis Lt 33rd regt 1855-56. Turkish Crimea, English type, unnamed as issued. Purchased from Liverpool Coin & Medal Co 1981. Lt Willis was present for the attack on the Redan in June 1855, he was also present at the second attempt to capture it in September 1855. He later served in Mauritius in 1857. With the Grenadier Company he served in India in the Mutiny suppressing the Mutineers. He served at Sholopar, Deesa, and Baneah. The Regiment never applied for a Mutiny Medal, though he served in the Field Force that besieged and occupied Dwarka. See Illustration £500-700 |

Purchased from the Willoughby Medal Co Swindon in 1981. The roll shows he arrived at the camp in June 1855, from the reserve company in Malta. £200-250 |

Captain Jervis does not appear in The Army List for 1869. The raised naming is correct though offset, again due to striking movement. £600-800 |

AN OFFICERS ABYSSINIAN WAR MEDAL. Named in raised letters on the reverse, to Ensign D W K Barr H M 33rd Regt. Purchased from Spinks June 1980. Interestingly the naming is off centre, possibly due to the disc turning when struck. Ensign Barr was on the strength of the 33rd Regt attached from the Staff Corps India, confirmed by the roll. David William Keith Barr was born 29th November 1846, the son of Lt General Henry James Barr, Bombay Staff Corps. Commissioned Ensign on the 20th Sept 1864, Lt 22 July 1868, after his return to India from the Abyssinian War. He was promoted to Captain in 1876, twelve years to the day from becoming an Ensign. From 1881 until 1887 He was Political Agent and Superintendent Rewah, promoted Major 20th September 1884. In 1888 He became Resident at Gwalior whence he remained until 1892. Promoted to Lt Col 20th September 1890, whilst at this post. He then served in Kashmir for two years. From 1894-1900 he served in Central India as the Governor Generals Agent. From 1900-1905 He was Resident at Hyderabad and was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the Star of India. Dating from the 26th June 1902. In 1905 He became a member of the Viceroys Council of India. See Illustration £800-1000 |
