AN ABYSSINIAN WAR MEDAL RN. An Abyssinian War medal named to H D Shirtliffe. RN. Engraved naming not raised. See Illustration £400-500

AN AFGHANISTAN MEDAL TO THE 17th FOOT. A second Afghanistan War medal named to 1767 Pte J Brown. 1/17th Regt, in sloping capitals. With bar for Ali Musjid (21-11-1878), the hill fortress at the entrance to the Khyber Pass. Pte James Brown embarked for India in the City of Brussels, 30th November 1870, joining his Regiment the 1/17th Leicestershire Regt in March 1871. Remaining at Lucknow or Delhi until serving in Indishera and Peshawar in 1874. In July and August he was stationed in a small Hill Station called Cherat, near to Nowshera. The 1/17th were part of the Peshawar Field Force which crossed the Frontier at Jamrud and captured Ali Musjid the same day. They took part in the Punitive Raid into the Bazar Valley, 21st-24th December. After that they were employed on the duties of maintaining roads and protecting convoys etc. Pte Brown transferred to the 33rd Regt in 1880. £250-300

A RHODESIA 1896 MEDAL. A Rhodesia 1896 reverse no bar medal, named to 4945 Pte A C Smith 2/W.Rid.Regt. The namimg is in engraved upright capitals, the medal is confirmed on the roll. There were six 'Smith' surnames in the 2nd W R Regt, one A, three F's and two William's. Purchased from Donald Hall in 1978. It was originally with a 5 Bar QSA, DWR Mounted Infantry. A RHODESIA 1896 MEDAL. A no bar Rhodesia 1896 medal, named in upright caiptals to 3160 Pte G F Crisp. 2nd W Rid.Regt. No 3160 Pte George Frank Crisp is confirmed on the BSA Roll. He served at Pietermaritzburg in Natal with the 2nd Batt, before joining the British South Africa Coy forces. Purchased Sothebys Sale 5/3/1980, lot 203. See Illustration £400-450

A 5th W RIDING REGT DCM & BAR. A George V Distinguished Conduct Medal and Second Award Bar. Officially impressed naming to, 241337 Cpl B Siswick.1/5.W Rid.R. T.F. One of two such awards to the 5th Battlion, six such awards to the Battalions of the W Riding Regt. London Gazette 26th July 1917. 241337 Cpl B Siswick W Rid.R. For Conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a sentry group and under heavy shellfire, he completely disorganised and repelled an enemy raiding party by withdrawing his post to another position and opening rapid and accurate fire upon them, afterwards reoccupying his original position. His work has been consistently good throughout. Supplement to the LG 26/7/17 Page 7660. No home town given. Citation for his bar. L G 3/9/1918 Bar to DCM (Home Town Paddock.) For Conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty. During an enemy attack when the front company ran short of ammunition, this NCO organised a party and in spite of intense machine gun and rifle fire made three journeys, leading the way himself, and bringing up sufficient ammunition for the company to meet the next attack. In recognition of gallant and distinguished conduct in the field, which has been brought to notice in accordance with the terms of Army Order 193 0f 1919. To be dated 5th May 1919 unless otherwise stated. Queens South Africa medal has a crude repair to the clasps, the roll shows his entitlement to Cape Colony & Transvaal bars. Possibly a later claim and subsequent additional mounting, is a possibility. His MIC record shows he arrived in France 14/8/1914 (Entrained Dublin 13/8/14). The card shows that he was awarded the clasp and rosettes 20/4/1920. Interestingly it also shows P of W. London Gazette September 1919 5847 C S M Denton.
