BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS

  1906 (Sep 24) Stampless cover with "Government Residence, Tulagi" printed flap, addressed to "F.J Wootton Strachon Esq, The Carlton Club, London W", handstamped with a Tulagi c.d.s and boxed "BRITISH / SOLOMON / ISLANDS / PAID" (a little underinked but quite clear), backstamped at Sydney (Oct 8) and London. A fine and scarce cover, the Paid handstamp used April 1906 until February 1907 (when Solomon Islands stamps were issued). Most covers with this handstamp had N.S.W stamps added in Sydney, but other covers without stamps are known datestamped at Tulagi on 24 Sept., stamps clearly not being applied to this one mail from the Solomons.   1938-40 Definitive issue Essays in unadopted designs, all with the effigy of King George VI that was used for the 1937-40 issue of India, the essays each in a perforated block of four on watermarked paper in colours very close to those of the issued stamps, all affixed to seven cards. Each card is headed "Burma Postage Stamps, Proposed Design For ...... Submitted For Approval" and is signed by the Artist Engraver, Ernest Archibald and the Master of Security Printing, India, Capt. R.C.G. Chapman R.E, the cards being lettered from "A" to "G" on the reverse; they bear the following essay blocks:-
"A" and "D" 3p, 6p, 9p
"B" and "C" 1a, 2a, 4a
"E", "F" and "G" 1r, 2r, 5r, 10r
The essays on cards "B" and "D" have the frames chosen for those issued values, as do the 1r and 2r essays on card "G" and the 5r and 10r essays on card "F"; the other essays all have unadopted frames whilst all essays have the unadopted KGVI vignette (as used for India stamps). We know of only one other set of these essays, also on similar cards, sold in the Gerald Davis collection in 2005 (Spink, April 6th, lot 54); the seven cards, together with four cards bearing the issued stamps, then realising £13,000 + premium. This set was sold in the May 2012 Argyll Etkin auction, also for £13,000 + premium. An exceptional essay group (96 essays on 7 cards). Photo on Page 114. £12,000-14,000
