Wolfgang von Gronau and his crew of three made two flights from Germany to USA, in the "Dornier Wal" in 1930 and again in the "Gronland Wal" in 1931. A third round the world flight was made in the "Gronland Wal" in 1932, again flying westwards to Canada and USA, continuing via Japan, China, Philippines, India and Europe.
  Germany. 1914-18 Covers and cards from air forces, various cachets including air stations and airship troops, air forces in Turkey, Poland, Bulgaria, also postcards of planes or airships, sheet of charity labels issued by the pilots relief organisation, etc. (57). £200-250

  1931 (Sep 1) Cover with flight cachet of Montreal, apparently flown on the final leg of the second transatlantic flight and posted upon arrival, also a Nov 11th cover "New York City again welcomes Capt. von Gronau and his three companions, twice conquerors of the Atlantic Ocean by Air" strangely posted six months later from St. Paul, and a photo of the plane, all three signed by all the crew, von Gronau, Albrecht, Hack and Zimmer.   1932 (July 21) Cover from Germany, flown around the world with stamps of seven countries comprising Germany (Lyst, July 21), USA (Chicago, Aug. 4), Canada (Prince Rupert B.C, Aug. 20), Japan (Imperial Hotel Tokyo, Sep. 9), Philippines (Manila, Sep. 29), Netherlands Indies (Tarakan, Oct. 2) and Ceylon (Colombo, Oct. 22), also Unalaska, Alaska duplex (Aug. 29) and Montreal flight cachet, two stamps on reverse, a little staining, nevertheless a rare cover, very few carried over the entire journey around the world. The following seven lots were sent by members of the Round Africa flight, and bear the boxed flight cachet. Mail was only sent by expedition members; no philatelic mail was carried, and mail is therefore scarce.
