  1856 (May 24) Cover to Halifax, Nova Scotia, prepaid 4d with red "ST GEORGES - BERMUDA / PAID" datestamp type P3/1, Halifax backstamp (May 28). The long enclosed letter is full of dislike and criticism of Bermuda and the Bermudians - the whites are all too proud to do any work, the coloured people too lazy, the "darkies" are a useless, lazy, dirty, mean, low, savage, worthless, vicious, drunken set of animals who lie, cheat, steal and depraved in every way. The letter included "We have not taken anything since the 26th of March, but are in hopes of doing better the latter part of this season", and has several references to other whalers. Included are 1937 (Nov 16) Baltimore to Bermuda and return first flight, 1938 (Mar 18) and 1939 (May 30) first G.B acceptances for Imperial and PAA New York to Bermuda services, June 7 PAA first flight from Ireland (not recorded by Clark) and August 5 first Imperial flight from Ireland (the only cover recorded by Clark), first return flight cover (7 recorded, priced by Clark at $1,000), Sept. 12 New York to Bermuda first flight by Southern route, etc. A good lot.   1838 (Nov 20) Entire letter to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in London, backstamped by the rare "BERMUDA" double arc datestamp type PM3, used in 1838-39 at the Royal Navy Post Office at Ireland Island, London arrival c.d.s (Dec. 21) and red boxed "PACKET LETTER". The right third of the letter sadly cut away, nevertheless a superb strike of one of the rarest Bermuda datestamps, just six examples recorded by Forand and Freeland. Photo on Page 106. £700-800

  1839 (Nov 19) Entire letter to the Wesleyan Missionary Society in London, backstamped by the rare "BERMUDA" double arc datestamp type PM3 with year above the date, used in 1838-39 at the Royal Navy Post Office at Ireland Island, London arrival c.d.s (Dec 16) and red boxed "PACKET LETTER". The letter lists correspondence between the Society and Brother Smith, who has persisted in giving the sacrament and baptising children at Baileys Bay. A fine strike of this rare datestamp, the latest of just six examples recorded by Forand and Freeland and the only example with year above date. With B.P.A Certificate (1966).   1863 (Jan 22) Mourning cover prepaid 4d to Campobello, New Brunswick with red 32mm single ring "PAID AT IRELAND ISLAND / BERMUDA" datestamp (date in two lines, no year) and "6d" rate handstamp applied in error (being the rate to G.B), crossed out and altered to 4d in manuscript. Handstamped "5 / CENTS" and "MORE-TO-PAY" with a 5c charge in blue crayon, reverse with type PM5 datestamps of Ireland Isle (Jan. 22) and St. Georges (Jan. 24), arrival datestamps of St. John (Jan. 31) and Campobello. The Paid c.d.s known to have been ordered from the USA, presumably as a replacement to the crowned circle but found to be unsatisfactory (with four later examples of the crowned circle recorded in 1863/4). The only known example of this Paid at Ireland Island c.d.s, a remarkable item, not recorded in the Ludington or Forand & Freeland books but listed by Proud (PD3). Unique. The enclosed letter from William Daking on H.M.S "Medea" reports various ships at Bermuda; the "Medea" is to leave for Rum Cay to retrieve part of the lost "Conqueror" which has been recovered by divers. Daking on H.M.S "Medea", three addressed to his fiancée Helen Donaldson at Birch Cove, Nova Scotia all privately carried (letters from Halifax (2) or St John's Newfoundland, also a letter written at sea without a cover), a further letter from Nassau with cover to Helen in England after their marriage, two letters from Bermuda (no covers) with a similar letter from the ship's Paymaster privately carried to Birch Cove all concerning his departure to England to obtain a discharge from the navy, also a front to Mrs Daking c/o Customs House, Halifax, with handstruck "4" of Halifax. Contents include reports of yellow fever on the ship, absence of blockade runners due to the fever, etc. (8 letters + 6 covers/fronts). £200-250

  1864 (Apr 24) Cover addressed to Kupio in Finland, via St. Petersburg, prepaid 1/9 with superb red "PAID / AT / IRELAND ISLE BERMUDA" crowned circle, red oval "PD" and datestamps of Aachen (June 7) and London with boxed postmen's delivery handstamp, backstamped "IRELAND-ISLE / BERMUDA" (PM5, May 14) and upon arrival at Kupio. The enclosed letter, from a Finnish seaman, tells of running aground, going to look for an Italian warship in danger in a storm, and going to Bermuda to repair their rudder which broke in a storm.
