Click to view full image... "Bilboena". 1837 (June 5) Entire letter to Huth & Co in London written by Capt. Laureano de Arrarte of the Spanish ship "Bilboena", reporting the ship dismasted and driven ashore at "Rotendin (Rottingdean) between White Cape and Breiton", taken ashore by the local Lloyds agent, endorsed on reverse "Bilboena stranded at Rottingdean, J.B Stone, agent to Lloyds, 5 June 1837", with a Brighton datestamp and "BRIGHTON / Penny Post". The "Bilboena" was bound from London to Bilbao when driven ashore at Rottingdean; the vessel was unloaded and refloated and taken into Newhaven Harbour. A remarkable early letter from a wreck, sent via the Lloyds agent, not recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn. Photo on Page 94. £1,000-1,200

"City of New York". 1864 (Mar 19) Small cover to Italy bearing four 10c green stamps, red "New York Paid 12" c.d.s and boxed "PD", carried on the Inman Line "City of New York" which struck a reef when approaching Queenstown and became a total loss, the passengers and mails all saved and landed at Queenstown on March 29th. Arrival datestamps, flap missing, otherwise fine and rare, with a contemporary magazine illustration of the stranded ship. The only cover from this wreck recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn in "Maritime Disaster Mail", ex Wood. Photo on Page 94. £500-600

  R.M.S "Labrador". 1899 Cover from Canada to London, the stamp washed off, the imprint of a 5c stamp on reverse, with a Glasgow G.P.O Officially Sealed label tied by datestamps of Glasgow (Mar 10) and London, the front with violet boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER" and manuscript inscription "Went down in the S.S Labrador, mail bags picked up off the Isle of Mull" probably written by the recipient. Also a front from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Glasgow, the stamp washed off and replaced by another 5c stamp, datestamps of St. John's (Feb 16) and Liverpool (Mar 15) and scarce violet "RECOVERED FROM WRECK / OF S.S LABRADOR", stained. The "Labrador" was wrecked in the Hebrides on March 1st; seven mail bags were washed ashore on Mull, Coll and Tiree and were taken to Glasgow, with one other mailbag found by fishermen and taken to Liverpool.   Jamaica / G.B - Liverpool. 1915 Cover from Kingston, Jamaica, to G.B, the stamp washed off, handstamped "RECEIVED AT LIVERPOOL / DAMAGED BY SEA WATER" in violet. Hoggarth & Gwynn record this cachet on March 1915 covers from Korea and Japan, Chile and Jamaica, which were received at Liverpool on April 12th. An unusual origin and cachet. £100-120

"Lady Nelson". 1942 (Mar 9) Cover from St. Lucia to Southern Rhodesia, a little water stained and the stamps washed off, handstamped violet "Received in bad condition at / Foreign Section, Morgan Annex", "Received without contents at / Foreign Section, Morgan Annex" and "Postage Stamp Detached before Receipt at / Morgan Annex, N.Y.P.O", reverse with a U.S Officially Sealed label. Recovered from the Canadian National Steamships "Lady Nelson", which was torpedoed by U161 on March 9th and sank in Castries harbour. Also a photo of the ship after she had been raised and rebuilt as a hospital ship. The only recorded cover from this wreck, illustrated by Hoggarth & Gwynn. Photo on Page 94. £300-400

Japan - Coste and Le Brix Tokyo to Paris Flight. 1928 (Apr 7) Cover (with enclosed letter) posted from Tokyo to Hanoi franked 10s, endorsed "Par Avion Coste et Lebrix Japan - France. Tokyo 7 Avril 1928" and carried on their record breaking flight, with "BOURGET - AVIATION" arrival c.d.s (Apr 14). Also a picture postcard showing the route flown, the French aviators having left Tokyo on April 8th arriving at Paris on April 14th, the 16,750km completed in 101 hours of actual flying. Imperial Airways Crashes

  "Capricornus". 1937 (Mar 23) Cover from London to Baghdad franked KEVIII ½d + 2½d, reverse endorsed by recipient "Received P.M 28/3/37", recovered from the "Capricornus" which crashed on its inaugural flight on March 24th, when it hit a tree on the Mont de Beaujolais in the Rhone Valley during a snow storm, killing five people. Also two contemporary news cuttings about the crash. Fine and scarce. £120-150
