"Sirius". 1838 (June 30) Entire to London endorsed "P. Sirius" with red London c.d.s (July 18) and "SHIP LETTER / PLYMOUTH" on reverse, carried on the second and final voyage of the "Sirius". Also a Proof by the "Bureau of Engraving & Printing" showing the arrival of the Sirius, and letters of 1837 and 1843 from the St. George Steam Packet Co., the final item a printed letter about dissolving the company. The "Sirius" was built for the St. George Steam Packet Co but chartered to the British & American Steam Navigation Co in 1838, becoming the first ship to cross the Atlantic entirely under steam, beating the "Great Western" by several hours. "Liverpool". 1839 Entire letters from Philadelphia (Mar 8) to London prepaid 75c freight money fee and charged 1/7, carried on the second return voyage (file folds) or from New York (Dec 13) carried on seventh and final return voyage with "8" charge mark, both with Liverpool Ship Letter handstamps. Also a small printed label "Presented to Capt. Alexr McLeod as a token of regard by the Lady Passengers of the Great Liverpool, 26th April 1845". The Trans Atlantic Steamship Co. "Liverpool" made seven transatlantic crossings in 1838-39, the final voyage arriving at Liverpool on 11th January 1840, the second day of 8d uniform ship letter rates, having run out of coal and stopping at Fayal, Azores, for further supplies. After the collapse of the Trans Atlantic S.S Co. it was sold to P&O in 1840 and renamed "Great Liverpool". (3). £200-250

"Royal William". 1838-39 Entire letters carried on the City of Dublin Steam Packet Co. "Royal William", two letters carried on the second return voyage, from Philadelphia paid 75c + $1.50 freight money fee and charged 9/6, or from New York charged 2/10 but endorsed "allowed 1/5", both with red Liverpool Ship Letter probably applied in London; another carried on the third and final voyage, prepaid 1/- from Newcastle to New York with red Liverpool and London Ship datestamps. Also an entire to London endorsed to go on the first return voyage from New York, privately carried. The "Royal William" was the first steamer to sail from Liverpool, only making three transatlantic voyages in each direction. (4). £300-350

"British Queen". 1840 Entire letters carried by "British Queen" between G.B and Canada, comprising letter (Feb 29) prepaid 8d to Montreal with Liverpool and New York Ship datestamps, carried on the fourth voyage; May 14th letter from Government House in Montreal carried on the fifth return voyage and posted as an inland letter at Liverpool; and July 23rd letter from St. Thomas, Upper Canada, carried on the sixth return voyage, prepaid 9d currency + 25 cents U.S postage + 25c freight money fee, the only recorded freight money letter from St. Thomas sent several months after the Canadian Post Office supposedly prohibited the payment of freight money. "British Queen". 1840-42 Entire letters (4) and entires (2) from USA to G.B carried on the fourth, sixth or eighth return voyages, or from London to New York carried on the seventh and eighth voyages, also an 1842 letter from New York to Southampton carried on the second of three voyages for the Belgian Government. The first U.S cover paid 12½c + 25c freight money fee, with red Portsmouth Ship Letter, the second entire unusually with a Southampton Ship Letter (although landed at Portsmouth), the others with London Ship Letters. The "British Queen" completed nine transatlantic crossings in 1839-41 for the British & American Steam Navigation Co; after that company failed it was sold to the Belgian Government, completing a further three transatlantic crossings. "President". 1840-41 Entire letters carried by the British & American Steam Navigation Co. "President", comprising Aug. 31st letter from New York (Aug 31) to Scotland carried on the first return voyage with "8" charge and Liverpool Ship Letter, Sep. 30th letter from London to Virginia carried on the second voyage prepaid 8d with London and New York Ship datestamps, and 1841 (Feb 4) letter prepaid 8d from London to New York carried on her third and final voyage, a little toned. Also a printed handbill "Melancholy Fate of the President Steam Ship" with an illustration and poem, printed in London. The "President" was the world's largest steamer when launched in 1839, but only completed two transatlantic crossings in both directions, disappearing without trace on the third return voyage. R.M.S "Titanic". 1912 (Apr 4) Picture postcard depicting the new White Star Liner "Titanic", written on the ship on the proving voyage from Belfast to Southampton by a member of Harland & Wolff's staff from the Drawing Office of the Engine Works, to his girlfriend in Ireland. The message reads "4/4/12, White Star Liner "Titanic", Southampton, D.D, Harland & Wolffs latest, & the worlds greatest steamship has arrived safely (with D). Everything looks all gay with the ship all dressed up with flags, D", a KGV ½d cancelled at Southampton (4 Apr, 11.30am), horizontal crease into address panel, otherwise fine and unique. Also a photographic postcard depicting the ill-fated liner "Titanic (posted Apr. 23) and a mourning card with the ship and music played as she sank (posted Apr. 29). The "Titanic" famously sank on her first transatlantic voyage on April 15th. A few covers and cards are known from that voyage, off loaded at Cherbourg or Queenstown, but this is the only card we have recorded from the ship on her very first proving voyage to Southampton.
