Exempt Ship Letters. 1836 Entire letter from Demerara endorsed "Consignees p. Aberford", and 1842 front with upper flap endorsed "Consignees p. Duke of Portland", both to Liverpool, the first with light but readable "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP LR" (ExSL.2) and "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER" backstamp (S.13), the 1842 front with superb "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP" (ExSL.1) and a "2" charge mark, backstamped octagonal framed "SP 20 43 / LIVERPOOL / SHIP" (S.16). Both addressed to the port of landing and therefore exempt from both ship letter and inland postage charges, the second charged 2d to recover the cost of the master's gratuity.
