South Amern / Liverpool / Packet (P.27). 1854 Entire from Buenos Ayres to France, backstamped Buenos Ayres British P.O c.d.s and green "SOUTH AMERN / LIVERPOOL / PACKET" c.d.s (2 Dec., code B). A very scarce datestamp, used on mail carried by the South American & General Steam Navigation Co in 1854-55, this letter carried on the second of just four voyages made by this company from Buenos Ayres to Liverpool. Pkt c.d.s (Jan 7) and "ART-2". Tear to flap and splitting at folds repaired internally, a very scarce handstamp. £100-120

Above Oz (M.13). 1852 (Dec 1) Entire letter from Augusta to Belfast prepaid at the single rate of 24c, with circular undated "AUGUSTA / Ga", "PAID" and "24" all in blue, red "19" showing the credit to G.B. Found to be a double weight letter at Liverpool and handstamped "ABOVE ½Oz" but only charged the single rate deficiency of 1/-, backstamped "AMERICA / LIVERPOOL" c.d.s (P.5). The 1849 Anglo-US treaty stipulated that underpaid mail was to be treated as wholly unpaid and charged accordingly; however until the end of 1852 the New York and Liverpool Postmasters unofficially agreed to charge such letters with the deficiency only. A scarce item, one of just four underpaid transatlantic letters charged the single deficiency recorded by Colin Tabeart in an article in "Chronicle" (Feb 2000). Photo on Page 58. £150-180

  Segmented Arcs c.d.s (M.23). 1841 (Oct.) Entire letters from London to Montreal, or Leeds to Northampton, Mass (forwarded to Leicester, Cherry Valley) both sent on the "Caledonia" to Boston with the very scarce Liverpool datestamps with an incomplete circle consisting of four three segment arcs, code "L" (Oct. 23) on the front of the letter to Canada and code "D" (Oct. 31) on the reverse of the letter to USA. A rare pair, nine examples of this datestamp recorded by Tabeart (all on outgoing Packet letters by Cunard), only one with the code "L". (2). £150-180

The 1/1 charge deleted with a red Free datestamp applied, boxed "T.P / Rate 2", the 2d Post charge for a letter transferred from the General Post to the Twopenny Post for delivery. The letter from John Worthy states he is alive and living on the Barque "Essex" lying at the Port Elizabeth whale fishery; his pension is to continue to be paid to the Parish of Kingston to support his family. Robertson and Tabeart show the "India / LETTER" handstamp to be a London mark (Rob. In.10); however the c.12 recorded examples are all on letters landed at Romney in 1835-39. It is therefore clear this mark was applied at Romney, the red India Letter mark then applied in London as the Romney handstamp did not include the port name.
