  1808-10 Entire letters from Edinburgh or Bishops Auckland to London, both endorsed "not known" and returned, with red 22mm or 25mm diameter circular framed "R" handstamps (Jay L200), only found on returned letters. Jay only records the 25mm version of this handstamp but clearly two differing marks were in use. Scarce, probably fewer than twenty examples known. (2). £240-280

  1826-1939 Undelivered covers and cards with 1826 letter bearing nine London datestamps and various endorsement, others with explanatory marks comprising red "INSUFFICIENTLY / ADDRESSED" of London (1864) or Edinburgh (1865), Brighton covers with red boxed "GONE AWAY AND / LEFT NO ADDRESS" (1878) or "Gone No address / 132" (1893, I.R ½d with Brighton Station R.L c.d.s), "Insufficiently addressed / 930" on an unaddressed 1899 ½d card posted at York, and violet boxed "RETURNED FROM ABROAD / REASON FOR NON-DELIVERY / NOT STATED" (2, 1938/9, also a forgery of similar handstamp on 1861 entire).   1848 Entire letter from Bedale to East Witton, "not known" endorsements for both East and West Witton so returned to the sender, undated circles of "THORNTON-WATLASS" and "WEST-WITTON" in blue, with red crowned "The Party to whom this letter / is Addressed cannot be FOUND / 8 FE 1848". Also an 1850 stampless cover from London to Paris endorsed "Refuse", returned with similar red crowned "This letter has been REFUSED / 8 JU 1850", the strike a little doubled. These explanatory handstamps introduced in 1847 when the law changed as a result of the activities of fraudster Joseph Ady, compelling senders of unpaid returned letters to pay the postage.   1821 George IV Coronation admission ticket to Westminster Abbey numbered 4422, plain portion below inscribed "North Door Upper Boxes" with printed "Howard of Effingham" signature, this portion separated from the printed ticket; also Pass Tickets for Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall, all three superbly printed by Whiting in three colours using the Congreve method, embossed borders by Dobbs with the embossed seal of the Earl Marshall below. Scarce early examples of Congreve printing by Whiting, similar examples illustrated in the recent book on Postal Reforms by J. Grimwood-Taylor. (3). £300-350
