FREE MAIL - TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF BLACK "Above Privilege" MARKS ON FRONTS & COVER FROM LONDON; 1803/07 fronts & 1811 E to Aberdeen/Durham/Peterborough each endorsed "Above 1oz" with mainly very fine (rare thus) black "Above Privilege" marks (GC LP7 (front & E, the latter with two strikes)) & variant (front) - very different clear fancy loops to the "P", but both c.60mm long) charged "3/8" (fronts) or "2/4" (E). Good to see a new sub-type for a mark otherwise recorded (albeit infrequently) for almost 10 years; it is no surprise that this fancy lettering mark had to be replaced quite regularly, it is just that strikes are seldom clear enough to distinguish them. BUSINESS AND "ABOVE/WEIGHT" MARKS; Rare group of ELs from various VIPs posted from "READING" (mileage cds but address over-written with notes) or sent entirely free in the London Local Post (4) inc. one with regular crowned "FREE" cds struck in error (no need for mail to Freeling) and immediately smudged (!), boxed 1829 "TP/Piccadilly", or General Post/Local Post backstamps; ref. postage on letters not to a "usual residence", the suspension of franking when Parliament recessed (with detailed response copy in Freeling's? hand), no contents or seeking refund (granted) of postage charged on a Petition. Few Freeling letters have postal marks; plus 13 Sept. 1819 E (some edge wear, one flap partly lost) from London to Cullompton endorsed "1 oz" and so with "3/8" rate and a mainly v. fine red "ABOVE/WEIGHT" (GC LW2) on the front; plus 2 July 1834 front from London to Brighton with two mainly very fine unrecorded (?) black "ABOVE/WEIGHT" marks (words of differing lengths but too late for LW2, and 2 years later than any recorded unframed version of this mark, so presumably a new form of LW2. ACTS OF PARLIAMENT IN OPEN-ENDED WRAPPER; 1831 wrapper (part lost affecting cds but leaving imprints clear) with rare "Par: Pro:/Free" imprint and printed address to Marlborough with Free cds (part lost at top), complete large 1826 open-ended wrapper that originally contained acts to Shaftesbury endorsed "Cap.76 to 79 4 Copies" with fine FREE cds to Aylesbury & 1831/36 pair of free fronts endorsed "Par. Pro." or "Parliamentary Papers"; 1836 EL from "Brussels" to Norwich sent under cover to the Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office who addressed and franked the letter by inland mail from London 3 days later; plus 1833/39 fronts (latter with corner repair) franked from London to Alexandria (apparently a personal letter to an Egyptologist; sent c/o an Agent in Marseilles) illegally franked by "Melbourne" (the future Prime Minister!), the then Home Secretary, or to Canada franked by a senior civil servant. MARY'S "SCILLY" MARK TO LONDON; 10 Mar. 1828 EL (folds neatly to display internal heading beside address-panel) from "St. Martin's Island, Scilly" to London charged "1/1" with a mainly fine St. Mary's "SCILLY" on top flap beside London arrival cds (21 Mar.); interesting contents ref. inability of the islanders to pay for the preacher on St. Martins. We have only recorded one earlier cover (1827) from this tiny island. Important Scilly Isles Exhibition Item. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE - EARLY VELLUM DEED WITH ORIGINAL RED WAX SEAL ATTACHED; 1459 (38th year of the reign of King Henry VI) vellum indenture deed (ref. transfer of land in "Westerleyk, Saxendale & Esterleyk" in Notts. - minor creasing) that fits an album page sideways (10 max. x27 cms., excluding pendant seals) in a neat hand (full Latin transcript & translation) with original one pair of red wax pendant seals attached at foot (two other seals lost).
