WORLDWIDE MARITIME POSTAL HISTORY - WWII FRENCH BATTLESHIP 'RICHELIEU': 18 May 1944 letter written aboard the French battleship 'Richelieu' in service with the Royal Navy 'Eastern Fleet' from 3 Apr. to 3 Aug. 1944. Struck with 'dumb cancel and addressed to U.S.A. Text in French written by Robert (Bob) Rosati to Dele (Odile) and mentions scorching temperatures in contrast to his previous letter dated 14 Apr. when he talked of his move from 'a very cold location' (when the Richelieu was off Norway) to a very hot one, and gave his postal address as F.S. Hanschell, surgeon (T.) R.N." to London with very fine purple boxed "PASSED BY CENSOR/No.25" initialled "H.M.H." beside a matching very fine rare purple circular "PASSED BY CENSOR/[Crown]/[Anchor]/No.26", having a very fine 2-ring "KASAMA/N. RHODESIA" cds on the reverse. Thought to be a unique combination of markings from this famous and tiny expedition that successfully took boats from Cape Town overland to Lake Tanganyika and stopped the German flotilla on the lake; it was the inspiration for the famous Bogart/Hepburn 1951 movie "The African Queen".
