FRANCE - BALLON MONTE COVER TO BELGIUM - FROM THE VERY RARE "VILLE D'ORLEANS" MAILBAG THROWN INTO THE SEA OFF NORWAY; 24 Nov. 1870 EL to Brussels with Paris and London c.d.s. on face, and stamp washed away. The rear with Ostend and Brussels transit or arrival c.d.s., and the front with v. fine London "PAID" c.d.s. (2 Dec.) and matching "PD" (to prevent Postage Due charges from being invoked). Carried on the Ville d'Orleans which almost crashed in the North Sea; the pilot had to jettison one mail bag - including this cover - into the sea which was picked up by a Norwegian fishing boat and handed over to the French Consul in Mandal.
